Why do we suck in the red zone?

We have been horrid for years in the red zone. We have gone through many coordinators, but no matter what our red zone offense has been just plain bad. I've watched many teams with bad-average offenses score in the red zone, yet we hardly ever do. This is a serious question, cause its very hard to fathom that all our coordinators call bad red zone plays, and no one can ever get open. I just don't understand i guess, and am looking for some kind of clarification as to why our red zone offense for the last many years continues to just plain suck.

Re: Why do we suck in the red zone?

    my reasons

1.Lack of a big huge receiver who can go up and get the ball.

    2. lack of a great pass catching tight end

    3. lack of push from the offensive line

All three things lead to our struggles. Hopefully all three are addressed next year.

It's funny how most people think it's the passing game. How many running TD do we have after six games? The answer is zero.

You already mentioned "play calling" but it goes hand in hand with "play design"

Then of course you need some skill position players that can execute!

I guess i just thought that getting a compeletly new coaching staff to call plays and some new players we would be some what able in the red zone, but yet it is still our achilles heal.

So who in your opinion is at fault? Do we not have the right designed plays? i know our wr's and te's arnt the best, but still we should at least score more then once every 4 games in the red zone. i am not questioning you, im just trying to understand how we can still be so horrid while other teams with average offenses can score. i feel like we are cursed. it almost seems like red zone offense isnt worked on, but of course i know it is.
The jets could score in the red zone when shotty was OC. why cant we? i am just tired of horrid red zone offense.

i understand we dont have the best of skill players. idk, im very tired right now so mind not working good. and i agree with your points 100%. but i even teams with bad qb's or bad wr's still can score in red zone more then us it seems. maybe im wrong but we have sucked in this area for years.

There is plenty of blame to go around.

Obviously the plays that we use in the red zone are not fooling any defenses. Therefore, IMO, they are poorly designed for the situation. Some of these plays might work better with the right mixture of run, pass, and play action pass - hence play calling. Far too often I see us lining up in shotgun formation in the red zone completely negating the play action pass, if indeed it has been set-up with the right mixture of run calls.

And then execution, execution, execution by the entire offense.

That is a great explanation for our woes, it really is. Now i wonder why it hasnt been fixed, for years and years, especially when fans can notice it, and the coaches should be on top of it.

Re: Why do we suck in the red zone?

I understand Daryl Richardson is doing a great job and has been more consistent than Jax but if you guys noticed Richardson was the back when we got inside the 10

IDC how good he is during the game u just got to have jax run it at the goal line...You can say he has not been successful on the goal line in previous season but the guy falls forward and just flat out pushes the pile...The way the guy is built u need to keep feeding him near the goal line he made a nice catch for the 2 points

So in the red zone we need to run 39!!!!!! Barry Richardson gets some nice pushes in the run game We just need to pound the ball in the end zone with Jax

I like the THunder (jax) and Lighting (richardson) combo

    Agree 100%

In the chatroom during the game, I called for a Bradford sneak and it turned out to be 6. After seeing him bent in ways the human body shouldn't be, not so sure I want to see that call for a while!

I noticed SJ being out inside the 10.....I can't disagree with that any more. SJ is still hesitating at the point of the hand-off, looking for a gap when he'd be better off just running straight into his own lineman with no looking around or anything else. Just go lower your shoulder and go straight into the pile of bodies with no stutter step or hesitation.

Biggest thing to me though is winning at the point of attack and this OL has a ways to go on that front. Need a talent infusion more than anything else.

Valid points, and these issues have been plaguing the Rams for years, which is likely contributing to why red zone issues span multiple regimes.

This team has not had a big and reliable wide receiver who can win jump balls in the end zone. The Rams haven't had a legitimate tight end for... a while now. The offensive line has been a weakness more than it has been a strength over the last decade, IMO.

Ferter brings up some great points about the playcalling as well, but really, when you don't have the talent and the field gets shortened, it gets tougher to make gains and find the endzone.
