Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
i cant believe i barely thought about this but now i think i know why the rams are playing Jason Smith at RT. Why Would any team use the 2nd Overall pick on someone they plan to use as a RT? well simple, the LT is said to be the most important on the Oline which is true but it is also false. it is true because its important when your QB is Right Handed and you need to protect his blind side. do i got you thinking now? well just in case you dont get it yet the only logical reason for drafting an offensive linemen with a top 5 pick and using him at RT would be to protect the blind side of a left handed QB. but wait the rams dont have a left handed QB..dun dun dun!!! is this opening the door for Tim Tebow or what? or maybe the rams have their eyes on another left handed QB. who knows this is just a thought that came across my head while i was bored in class. tell me what you guys think

Re: Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
No that's not the reason for Smith playing RT. He is playing right tackle because he can not compete with Alex Barron for left tackle. Like it or not Barron has been solid this year. That includes allowing 0 sacks against Jared Allen and allowing 0 sacks against Dwight Freeney. The only sack Freeney got was pushing through Smith.

Re: Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
With the draft pick we will be holding, no way would be going after Tebow.

Re: Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
Letting a rookie learn on the side where his mistakes will be less costly seems perfectly logical to me. Also, he did play on the left some during the Colts game.

Re: Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
Barron is simply not good at the RT spot. He sucks it up over there. However, Barron is solid at the LT spot. So, that puts Smith at the RT spot for now, but we'll see what happens at the end of the season.

Re: Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
IMO he needs to play LT. Teams don’t use 2 overall draft pick on a RT. I think the rams want him over there but it seems to me the best way to learn how to play on the left side is to play on the left side.

It's a fun conspiracy theory though. What else is going on behind closed doors? A trade for Jake Long? We would have drafted him had he been available last year you know...I think we're planning something for that left side.

I like it!
Tebow in round 2? Didn't even think about it like that. I highly doubt it will come to fruition, but it is interesting nonetheless.
Of course another reason could be because we are a power running football team, and you want your best run blocker next to the tight end to open up lanes for your best player.
Either way Tebow should be a Ram in 2010.

Re: Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
Maybe Shurmur has some plays drawn up that Bulger throws the ball backwards behind the line of scrimage, in which case Smith would then be protecting his blind side. This could be the 4 plays that Spags wouldn't let the media see last week. Watch out Saints!

Re: Why Jason Smith is Playing RT
he's playing rt because he needs a year to learn and barron is better on the left side for now. this offseason barron will be gone and he will be on the left side. i think he's doing great on the right side, and should make the transition to the left side fairly easily. he's got the tools, he just needs to get better adjusted to coming off the line quick against these fast pass rushers. freeney with what looked like a free-running sack on bulger was a good example, he just needs more experience before we trust him with the qb's blind side.
