Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
I read somewhere where someone said we need to cut loose Avery because he is made out of glass. Do you think Avery will ever be that #1, 2 receiver?

Not for us. The team just can't keep waiting. Look at Setterstrom.
Patient, not saintly.

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
I really don't wish to pile on the guy since he just lost his season due to injury, but obviously Avery hasn't been the player who the organization envisioned when they drafted him. Despite some sporadic production, he has not lived up to expectations. Even still, he was being counted on heavily this year, and his loss is a blow.
The injury he suffered is major. It is possible to come back from it (i.e. Wes Welker & many others), but there is no guarantee he'll regain his form. His future as a player and as a Ram in my opinion is very much in doubt. Nothing to do at this point but wait and see. Nothing will happen for a year.

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
In short, no.
Can't stand up physically, and it's sad for the guy but this last injury will probably forever dampen any chances of him becoming a top-tier WR in the NFL.
When your best asset is your legs, and your speed, and you just tore up your ACL, it's like breaking the fingers of a pianist. He may play again, but with the stigma that he can't stay healthy hanging over his head, it will be difficult for him to break back in with another team if the Rams cut him loose after the season. It will be tough for him, and it's a damn shame.Faithful Rams fan since 1968

As long as he doesn't give up hope on himself, I won't give up hope on him. Jeremy Maclin took his rehab from ACL injury very seriously and came back from it faster and more explosive. Maybe the same can happen with Avery

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
it should be interesting to see how wes welker does this year, as he had the same injury. However, durability is certainly an issue for avery.
Early prediction that WR is our top need in the draft and free agency next year (assuming that there is a season)
AJ Green, georgia.

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
Let's put it this way: Although I'm sure he'll be able to get at least another year to play, his production and especially his injury have forced us to look for WRs through the draft and/or free agency. I don't think he's done but it'd be asinine on his part to be upset or offended for us to look for a stud #1 WR and it'd be idiotic on the Front Office's part to wait for him to recover. Wes Welker is proven. Avery is not.

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
Too soon to tell. This would have been his second year in Shurmur's offense, and by all accounts Donnie was improving. If Donnie has the will to go through a long and painful course of rehab while continuing to believe in himself, he could one day be that #1 or #2 guy .. Right now given the seriousness of his injury, the odds are stacked against him - but - where there's a will, there's a way ..
GC's observation that monitoring Welker who I believe had a similar injury, could be telling ..

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
Right now, it appears that the Rams will have three primary needs to fill in 2011. They are, in no particular order:
Wide Receiver
Defensive End (pass rusher)
Backup RB
Avery could still be a contributer, but he's unlikely to be an impact player in the future. His best asset has always been his speed. Even with today's medical technology, a torn ACL can result in the loss of a half-step, and that's all it takes to make the difference.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
I don't think we will be able to draft AJ Green since he is going to be a top 5 pick

But seriously, Jonathan Baldwin is the man. 6'5 225, 4.5 forty, great hands, and his physicality is Andre Johnson-like. I want to see Danario Alexander heal and develop in our system first, but if we still need a big, tall, fast #1 receiver (and what team wouldn't want one of those?) then I want this guy on our team.

Re: Will Avery ever be the WR we need?
baldwin is nice but what about michael floyd? in the event we finish with a high 1st rounder, im pretty confident he'll be around late in the 1st like dez bryant was this year. same goes with guys like julio jones, although aj green is the best prospect out of them all.
as for the question, i think avery is a fantastic #2 or slot but him being the #1 guy doesn't exactly strike fear in the opposing secondary. i expect him to have a full recovery and be challenging for that #2 spot next year between mardy and whoever else is going at the time.
