Is this the worst defense ever? The definitive answer is....

Well, the statistical answer anyway is..........not even close. The 2005 Rams are not even in the top (or bottom, depending how you look at it) 20 all-time for points allowed. Here's how it breaks down for the worst defenses of all time:

1. 1952 Dallas Texans - (1-11) - 38.6 points per game
2. 1950 Baltimore Colts - (1-11) - 38.5 ppg
3. 1954 Wash. Redskins - (3-9) - 36 ppg
4. 1966 NY Giants - (1-12-1) - 35.8 ppg
5. 1950 GB Packers - (3-9) - 33.8 ppg
6. 1963 Denver Broncos - (2-11-1) - 33.8 ppg
7. 1981 Baltimore Colts - (2-14) - 33.3 ppg
8. 1961 Oakland Raiders - (2-12) - 32.7 ppg
9. 1973 Houston Oilers - (1-13) - 31.9 ppg
10. 1972 NE Patriots - (3-11) - 31.9 ppg
11. 1951 NY Yanks - (1-9-2) - 31.8 ppg
12. 1958 GB Packers - (1-10-1) - 31.8 ppg
13. 1951 GB Packers - (3-9) - 31.3 ppg
14. 1964 Denver Broncos - (2-11-1) - 31.3 ppg
15. 1966 Atlanta Falcons - (3-11) - 31.2 ppg
16. 1975 New York Jets - (3-11) - 30.9 ppg
17. 1961 Denver Broncos - (3-11) - 30.9 ppg
18. 1965 Houston Oilers - (4-10) - 30.6 ppg
19. 1976 Seattle Seahawks - (2-12) - 30.6 ppg
20. 1980 New Orleans Saints - (1-15) - 30.4 ppg
21. 2001 Indianapolis Colts - (6-10) - 30.4 ppg
22. 1962 New York Titans (Jets) - (5-9) - 30.2 ppg
23. 1967 Atlanta Falcons - (1-12-1) - 30.1 ppg
24. 2005 St. Louis Rams - (4-6) - 30.0 ppg

Not that this news is reassuring for THIS year, but I thought maybe we could find some solace knowing that our current level of suckosity is less than noteworthy in the more historical perspective.

We still suck, just not on the all-time suck level.

Re: Is this the worst defense ever? The definitive answer is....

To get a better perspective, let's look at this a couple ways:

Since the merger:

1. 1981 Baltimore Colts - (2-14) - 33.3 ppg
2. 1973 Houston Oilers - (1-13) - 31.9 ppg
3. 1972 NE Patriots - (3-11) - 31.9 ppg
4. 1975 New York Jets - (3-11) - 30.9 ppg
5. 1976 Seattle Seahawks - (2-12) - 30.6 ppg
6. 1980 New Orleans Saints - (1-15) - 30.4 ppg
7. 2001 Indianapolis Colts - (6-10) - 30.4 ppg
8. 2005 St. Louis Rams - (4-6) - 30.0 ppg

Since 1980:

1. 1981 Baltimore Colts - (2-14) - 33.3 ppg
2. 1980 New Orleans Saints - (1-15) - 30.4 ppg
3. 2001 Indianapolis Colts - (6-10) - 30.4 ppg
4. 2005 St. Louis Rams - (4-6) - 30.0 ppg

Since 1982:

1. 2001 Indianapolis Colts - (6-10) - 30.4 ppg
2. 2005 St. Louis Rams - (4-6) - 30.0 ppg

And after this season we will be #1 in the last 25 seasons of the NFL.

Ferter.See if you can draw a comparison between the Rams of 04 and 05 Defences.Just to see how greatly we have improved with the influx of new talent, and how Larry Marmie is responsible for this.
