Reports: Health issues forcing Martz out

Rams head coach Mike Martz has decided to resign due to health concerns, according to multiple radio reports in St. Louis.
Both KMOX and 1380 ESPN Radio reported the move. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's web site, Martz has cancelled his normal Monday press conference and Rams president John Shaw is scheduled to appear at a 5 p.m. news conference instead.
The Post-Dispatch also reported that Martz was back in the hospital, getting treatment for an infection in his heart valve tissue.
Martz was on the sidelines Sunday for the Rams' 38-31 loss to the Seahawks, but has missed time repeatedly this season, including a pair of practices last week. Martz said last week that doctors believe he has endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the heart's inner lining of heart valve.
"This is something that if you let it go, it could become a real issue," Martz told the Associated Press last week.
Martz has been treated with antibiotics and said he felt better during Sunday's game than he had during the week. But evidently, he did not feel well enough to continue as the Rams head coach.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Re: Wow! Martz resigned
Honestly I can't imagine him making this decision unless he is in serious bad health ... and if that is the case, I can't see him picking everything else back up in mid-season ... 4- 6 weeks is just something that is probably being tossed out as a trial baloon.

Re: Wow! Martz resigned
You should be. Cuz Marmie is as big a part of the ill health of Rams Nation as heart disease.

Indefinate leave of absence due to health reasons.
Not a resignation by any means.
He'll be back.......

Re: Wow! Martz resigned
I'm surprised that story has not been changed yet. It is totally contradictory to everything else in the local media and on ESPN. No one else is saying he resigned.
edit: nevermind, it looks like it has been changed.

Re: Wow! Martz resigned
I believe he is just taking an indefinate leave of absence. The Ram's FO is Not reporting that Martz has resigned.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!!

Re: Wow! Martz resigned
John Shaw stated in the press conference that he was talking a leave of absence. Think that at the least, he will be back in some capacity this season. If not doing the head coaching duties, I'm sure he'll be involved with the offense.

Martz' Health
I suspect that Martz will follow in the footsteps of Madden, Parcells and Vermeil, who all had health/stress issues and made the big bucks for a while in the broadcast booth. Martz' analysis of offense and his reputation as a gifted offensive coach who crafted the "Greatest Show on Turf" will get the interest of Fox or ESPN.
