Wow, thinking about the future of the QB position ...

I am a big fan of Marc Bulger. I love his toughness, and I love his cool, calm demeanor. When he gets time, he is a very good pocket passer. We've all seen in the past what he can do when he is put in the proper situation. It has made me wonder what could have been this season had he been healthy when a solid O-line around him. I definitely think we'd have at least 2-3 more wins, if not more ...

With that said, I watched the Packers-Cowboys game last night and was thoroughly impressed by one QB. He took the football, and looked like a seasoned veteran all night long, slinging passes all over the field, hanging in the pocket, scrambling for extra time, running for first downs ....

And I'm not talking about that Cowboy's QB, I'm talking about Aaron Rodgers. Boy, he looked sharp in his first real action. I know some diehard Packer's fans, and they are feeling alot better about the future after seeing Mr. Rodgers perform last night. I didn't realize he had the arm strength that he does ...

I hope Bulger can stick around for awhile, and get a chance to realize his full potential. But I am sold that we need to get a younger, mobile type quarterback in here for the future. Definitely not the Vick/Young type of QB, but the Rodgers type. Tony Romo is a little wild and erratic for me, not what I am interested in. But I truly believe Rodgers is going to be a great one ....

A more mobile QB might have won us an extra game or two, even with the poor O-line ...

Re: Wow, thinking about the future of the QB position ...

Excellent point about Rodgers. I have been asking/hoping to see him in action for the past two years now. I still love seeing Farve out there, but I always thought Rodgers would be great and respected him a lot for sitting patiently behind Farve waiting for him to retire. He could have easily moved to a number of different teams and become an instant starter.

Having said that. I have always praised marc as being a top 4 QB in the league. I am however starting to seen some weekness in his ability, mainly is lack of mobilty. I think in todays NFL that is a key attribute for QBs. Although if anyone noticed from the GB/DAL game last night, QBs who put up the big numbers every week are the ones who have all day in the pocket. So I am still looking forward to seeing Marc again next year behind a REAL OL.

Re: Wow, thinking about the future of the QB position ...

Its unusual that I get down, because I am quite the optimist, but I am feeling significantly anti-Linehan for the first time in awhile. I cannot understand why we let a mobile, strong armed QB like Fitzpatrick go, only to replace him with an undersized, noodle-armed QB like Brock Berlin. The fact that Linehan thinks Berlin might be the real deal is even more freightening considering the fact that Berlin couldn't even produce on the college level ...

With Fitzpatrick in here, we probably would be 5-6 or 6-5. The original post about Rodgers was a lead-in to this because Fitz was in a similar situation. He got to sit and absorb information for a very very long time and at this point, I am certain he was ready to come in and play. Instead, we are stuck with an over-the-hill Gus and a weak-armed no name as our QB's ....

Still don't understand the logic of letting Fitz go. At minimum, why not demote him to practice squad and get rid of Berlin?

Infiniti....it's about comfort. All coaches do it. Linehan included. Good example is Martz. Where is McDonald and Furrey? Detroit. Linehan knows Berlin from his Miami jaunt.

Re: Wow, thinking about the future of the QB position ...

I didn't see the game, but I heard the Cowboys were blitzing the hell out of Favre, but laid off when Rodgers came in the game. I guess they figured since he hadn't had a lot of game time, they didn't need to force mistakes- he would make him on his own and he didn't.

I think it had to do with the amount of money that Ferotte was getting. Fitz was going to be a free agent next season, I believe, and they didn't want to have to pay the back up QBs that much money combined.

Fitzpatrick IMO never loooked as good as he did when he played in his first few starts.

Maybe not, but no way he plays worse the Gus, and he definitely is nimble enough to be able to avoid the pass rush ...

First off for the record, I liked Fitz and was sorry to see him go. However, if we had signed him to the practice squad, another team could have come in and swiped him for nothing. I don't know if Linny ever thought Berlin was better than Fitz, but Fitz was worth a draft pick albeit a 7th rounder. Combine that with what M-41 pointed out regarding his pending free agency and the money we would have had to pay him, and he became expendable. That 7th round pick may seem inconsequential now, but you just never know wihen it comes to the draft. That 7th round pick could be used to trade up and grab a guy in round 4 or 5 that ends up being a steal. There is also the possibility that Linny and crew felt there would be QBs available in the last round or two of next year's draft possessing abilities commsurate with Fitz. We'll likely never know what the Rams braintrust were thinking when the decision to trade Ryan F. was made.
