YES! JT: Schottenheimer on Rams Radar as OC candidate

    By Jim Thomas

Brian Schottenheimer is interviewing today with Nick Saban about the offensive coordinator job at Alabama. But it looks like Schottenheimer will have another job opportunity in St. Louis.
Multiple league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Saturday that Jeff Fisher is interested in hiring Schottenheimer as his offensive coordinator with the Rams.
Fisher informed the Rams on Friday he wanted to coach in St. Louis; contract details between Fisher and the Rams still must be finalized, but that's expected to happen no later than Sunday evening.
In the meantime, Fisher has been given the green light by the Rams to "officially" talk to potential members of his coaching staff. Fisher has been informally working on his staff over the past week or so as he contemplated whether to coach for St. Louis or Miami.
Schottenheimer, 38, and the New York Jets had a mutual parting of the ways earlier in the week after a season in which the Jets finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs, and their offense finished 25th in the league.
Schottenheimer, the son of longtime NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, also interviewed for the Jacksonville head-coaching job which went to Mike Mularkey. Marty Schottenheimer is a candidate for the head-coaching job in Tampa Bay, but indications are that Brian wants to cast his own lot in the NFL rather than joining his father if Marty gets the Bucs' job.
For Brian Schootenheimer, the obvious attraction to working with the Rams rather than the college ranks with Alabama is the chance to work with Sam Bradford at quarterback. Brian's first NFL coaching job was as an offensive assistant in St. Louis in 1997 on Dick Vermeil's first Rams staff.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For more detail response by me here's something I put out 4 days ago about my opinion of schottenheimer as the Rams OC:
Brian Schottenheimer as Rams OC - My opinion

This would be a huge hire for us. Say what you will, but the man coached an offense to back-back AFC championships in spite of an overrated QB. This would be an amazing hire.

Our staff if we got Gregg Williams would consist of a HC who came 1 yard from tying a super bowl; an OC who coached an offense to back-back AFC championships; and a DC who coached a super bowl defense....

WOW is all I can say.

This doesn't really impress me too much. The Jets didn't get to those games because of their offense. I'm not trying to hate on the guy, but seriously, what has he ever done as a coordinator?

Re: YES! JT: Schottenheimer on Rams Radar as OC candidate

Not a fan of Brians. i rather have Marty come in and run our offense if he doesnt land the Bucs job.

    per wiki:
Schottenheimer was an assistant coach with the St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Syracuse Orange, USC Trojans and Washington Redskins from 1997 to 2001, before becoming an assistant coach with the Chargers. He was an assistant under his father, Marty Schottenheimer, in three of those coaching positions: Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers.

In early 2007, Schottenheimer's name was floated around as being a possible replacement for the departed Nick Saban as the Miami Dolphins head coach. He later removed his name from consideration for the Dolphins head coaching position, preferring to stay in New York.[2]
After the 2008 NFL season, when coach Eric Mangini was fired, Schottenheimer was one of the first candidates to interview for the open head coaching position. However, he eventually lost out to Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan
On January 13, 2009, Schottenheimer announced that he was staying with the Jets and would not interview for the head coaching vacancy in Buffalo.[3] On January 10, 2012, Schottenheimer announced he would not return to the Jets for the 2012 season. [4]
So he was with 6 teams in 5 years....and worked under his dad before running a pretty bland jets offense.

Im not impressed by Schotty, but I wouldnt denounce the hiring. I trust that Fisher will get the right guys his second time around.

As bad as the Jets offense was at times last year, I dont know how much of the blame can be put on his shoulders. I am of the firm belief that Sanchez is the main reason as to why their offense stalls so often.

With that said, I wouldnt makr judement of Schotty until I read up more about him.

I'd welcome Schottenheimer as our OC -- I think the faults he has taken in New York were overblown. Although I prefer Hue Jackson over him, I wouldn't mind if he came to St. Louis.

Although one thing that worries me is that if he were to have success here, he'd probably gain consideration for a head coaching position (and has had some to this point already) which would mean another new system for Sam. Just another reason I'd prefer Jackson because he'd offer the better chance for stability at the position.

My only problem with Shotty is that i fear he wants to become a head coach and dont know if he is only going to be here for a year...

But as "Bland" as you say his offense was in New York Sanchez threw for almost 3,500 yards and had 26 TDs...If he made better decisions he would not have thrown nearly as many picks

Also look at LT his last season in SD he had 223 att. and had 720 yards in those ageing legs that turned into 219 att. and 914 yards in Shotty's system 3.3 ypc to 4.2

I am not saying he is the greatest candidate but he can really groom Bradford who is a way better decision maker than Sanchez...His offensive strategy goes along with Fishers plan it can really work

I would be okay with him. Bradford is > Sanchez. The offense was good enough to help get them to 2 out of 3 AFC championship games in the last three years. Also, we don't know how much Rex Ryan had to do with the bland play calling. Ryan always preferred the run. Very similar to Fisher.

This would be a great hire IMO... Bradford has more talent then Sanchez and I can say that with all respect to Sanchez being a USC fan. They asked Sanchez to do more this year and he just could not deliver. I hope we hirer a QB coach as well...

Ugh. Hopefully he's ONLY on the radar. Schottenheimer has never impressed me. I watched a lot of Jets games and liked what I saw from their offense, liked because I hate the Jets. Schottenheimer had a great group to work with in New York and didn't do much with it. His playcalling reminds me of McDaniels, only worse. There's a reason Jets fans couldn't wait to have this guy fired.

This guy is a horrible OC, this would be a pretty bad hire. He had a lot more talent to work with than the Rams have and he didnt do crap with it.

Not sure about Brian. However, to be fair, I'm not sure how much of what went on in NY was his fault, and how much falls to their idiot of a HC.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!!

Are you gonna try to argue that their offense carried them to those championship games? Because I am pretty sure that any casual jets fan can tell you that their defense carries that team every year.

And those teams went to the AFC championship in spite of the quarterback and in general, the offense. Yes, he couldn't call a complex offense, but those teams won because of stifling defense, not offense. That would be like saying that it was a win to hire the Patriots' defensive coordinator this year. Hell, I don't even want to touch Dom Capers right now, and he has a history of being a great defensive mind.

Yawn and boo to Brian Schottenheimer. Now, if you could bring in the ghost of Heimerdinger, now that's a -inger I can be excited about.

No I'm not going to say they won with the O not at all... but I won't say they did nothing..
I'm thinking in terms of what Fisher has done and most likely likes about him. in 2009 they lead the league in rushing. In 2010 they finished fourth in the league in rushing, They had a ball control run first offense pass second... kind of what Fisher has done in the past. This year they tried to open it up and it was not good.

I can see why Fisher has him as a candidate... I think some of us need to realize with fisher it's going to be "ground chuck". In 2009 the Jets where first in rushing followed by guess who the Titans.
