UConn forward gets his shot; Nelson signs with Rams
April 30, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut basketball player Ed Nelson signed a two-year, free-agent deal with the St. Louis Rams on Sunday following the NFL draft.
"I didn't think I'd get drafted," said Nelson, expected to play tight end. "It's risky for a team to draft me, but a lot of teams know my potential."
Nelson, a 6-foot-8, 265-pound senior power forward, hasn't played football since his freshman year of high school.
Nelson, from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., played 29 games as a reserve for the UConn basketball team after transferring from Georgia Tech, where he was the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2001-02. He averaged three points and three rebounds at Connecticut.
At St. Thomas Aquinas High School, he averaged 26 points and 11 rebounds in his senior year and led the team to the Class 5A state title. He was named Florida Player of the Year for Class 6A-5A-4A by the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.
Nelson will graduate from Connecticut this weekend.
"It's a pretty big weekend," he said.
Anytime .ramfan., nice talkin with ya on Draft Chat by the way.
This could end up being some kind of freak pick up that turns out producing a Hall of Famer...?
Oh, thanks Rambruce, forgot about that.
Cool, he could be a nice pickup. I'm glad we signed him as a free agent and didn't draft him, though.
Heck, why not, he's worth a shot. He had pre-draft workouts with the Dolphins and Chiefs, if I remember correctly. His size [6'8 265] is very intriguing - optimistically he'd probably end up on the practice squad for now, but if he somehow makes the final roster, I bet he'd be tried on the kick-block/onside kick team.

Aaron Wilson, of the Carroll County Times, reports Connecticut TE Ed Nelson impressed scouts with his hands during his workout. One of the teams in attendance was the Miami Dolphins.
This guy is definately headed for the practice squad or more likely NFL Europe.
This guy could end up being a good special teamer.

Yo, BigRed... What the heck is with that new avatar????
Nevermind. I'm not sure I want to know.
Yea. Its disturbing me too. I can't sleep because it gives me nightmares.
I agree NFL Europe or the Practice squad where he'll be tasked with bulking up.
