You be the GM: Pick your core 15 for 2008-2010

Okay, you are the Rams GM. You MUST pick 15 current players as your "core" who will be locked in for the next three seasons 2008-2010. The players you leave out may or may not stay on the team for these three years.

    Here's mine:

    1. Marc Bulger
    2. Steven Jackson
    3. Torry Holt
    4. Adam Carriker
    5. Clifton Ryan
    6. Will Witherspoon
    7. Tye Hill
    8 Brian Leonard
    9. O.J. Atogwe
    10. Jonathan Wade
    11. Alex Barron
    12. Richie Incognito
    13. Drew Bennett
    14. Pisa Tinoisamoa
    15. Ron Bartell

Not such an easy task, huh? First, you have to eliminate players who might not have 3 good years left (Bruce, Pace). After that, finding 15 players to commit to was not easy. The first 7 or 8 were obvious. Then it became a tough choice.

Of course, these are the types of choices real GMs must face.

About the last four slots on the list are tough to decide. It's tough to evaluate the offensive linemen individually when there's no continuity on the line from one week to the next. The thing that really stuck out to me was that I didn't feel comfortable putting any of our defensive ends on the list.

Jones is a good call. I wasn't really thinking about Special Teams, but he should be on the list.

I agree - no DEs who have a long shelf life at this point.

Re: You be the GM: Pick your core 15 for 2008-2010

Here are the 15 I consider most important:

    1. M. Bulger
    2. S. Jackson
    3. T. Holt
    4. D. Jones
    5. B. Leonard
    6. A. Carricker
    7. C. Ryan
    8. O. Pace
    9. T. Hill
    10. J. Wade
    11. W. Witherspoon
    12. M. Setterstrom
    13. R. Incognito
    14. B. Romberg
    15. O. J. Otogwe
I struggled with several choices such as Bartell & Adeyanju. Plus I even felt Dante Hall was worth consideration, based on the little we've seen of him this year. I did add Romberg to give Marc some consistency at center. That relationship of QB to center is very important. I also left off Barron at OT and any other DE presuming that we'll draft one Long (Jake or Chris) next April. Orlando Pace is too valuable when healthy to be left off the list.

    In no particular order:
    1. Bulger
    2. Jackson
    3. Pace
    4. Barron
    5. Incognito
    6. Setterstrom
    7. Holt
    8. Carriker
    9. Ryan
    10. Hill
    11. D. Jones
    12. Witherspoon
    13. Otogwe
    14. Wade
    15. Chillar

It's pretty telling to not see Little listed much. Notables missing from my list: Pisa, Leonard, Brown, Romberg, Bruce, Bennett, McMicheal, Klop, Byrd, Wroten and had he been here, Dirt Claude. Some is an issue of age for me, others it's an issue of functionality with system and health. Others, such as had Dirt Claude still been around, and for instance Wroten and Brown, it is character, percieved or otherwise.

    Bulger
    Jackson
    Holt
    Carriker
    Ryan
    Hill
    Bartell
    Barron
    Incignito
    Tinoisamoa
    Bennett
    Wade
    Jones
    Witherspoon
    Leonard

Honorable mentions go to Chillar, Setterstrom, Atogwe and Brown-- Chillar ans Atogwe are off contract, and if I were GM, at least one (preferably OJ) would be brought back for next season. Brown is solid, but I think his role will diminish in time, and Setterstrom's status really depends on whether we pursue a guard in the offseason.

His last 2 injuries were unrelated flukes and people seem to forget how OL are productive well into there late 30's like Roaf, Sheilds, Slater, and Matthews. Pace will be a pro-bowler as long as he wants to be and there is no indication that he is not willing to play out his contract, which I believe has 3 more years on it.)

Pisa has been playing his best football in the past couple years. What exactly have you lost confidence in?

I think you really need to go five more to round it out. (1-15 in no particular order):

    1. M. Bulger
    2. T. Holt
    3. S. Jackson
    4. O. Pace
    5. M. Setterstrom
    6. D. Bennett
    7. B. Leonard
    8. A. Carriker
    9. C. Ryan
    10. W. Witherspoon
    11. P. Tinoisamoa
    12. B. Chillar
    13. T. Hill
    14. O. Atogwe
    15. F. Brown
    16*: A. Barron
    17*: R. Bartell
    18*: R. Incognito
    19*: D. Jones
    20*: R. McMichael

He didn't look like a Pro Bowler to me in 2006. We allowed the 4th most sacks in the league last season, and it seemed to me the pressure was coming as much from Pace's side as Barron's. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be as concerned about his age.

Re: You be the GM: Pick your core 15 for 2008-2010

How you people could turn on Leonard Little who's been our best defensive player for the last 4 or 5 years is beyond me.

So what he's not had a good season this year, who has? Besides, he's been playing while banged up as well.

It's funny how some of you have gone to great lengths to defend Marc Bulger even when he's played poorly, which has been for most of the season, and the heart and soul of the defense the last 5 years couldn't even make the Rams top 15 players. Incredible.
