Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
Point out his win/loss record at the end of the season, point to the door and say something like;
"Don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out.
...oh, and take McDaniel with you."Faithful Rams fan since 1968

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
You thank the man for his time and effort. Point out where he fell short and explain that you're moving on in a different direction. There's never an excuse for being rude. It just makes you look worse.

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
Firings are never pleasant, but you owe the person being let go an explanation- which in this case is pretty obvious. You further thank the person for giving it their best effort and regret it didn't turn out differently. Burning bridges and being nasty just shows a lack of class.

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
I would tell him thanks for trying but its not working out.
Explain how I was going to give him a chance next year because of this years injuries and last years turn around. However, with no sense of urgency come from him, I'm going another direction.
Tell him thanks and have fun having a top Defense in the league somewhere else.
I really have nothing against him. The RAMS gave him the job when he had never done it before. I also believe he left this team in MUCH better shape than when he got here. I think he's looking forward to going back to a DC anyways.

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
I would say you are better suited as a DC and it fits your personality more. GL, and I am sure you will find a job immediately.

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
If I were hired to fire Spags it would be happening right now.
It would go something like this:
Well Steve you have managed to win 10 regular season games out of a possible 44. That's a winning percentage of .227. I have to be honest here, you are way to close to the Mendoza line. Need I say more?
Bye Bye!

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
In tough situations like this I often find that music presents the message in a much more soothing manner. I would make sure that I had Neil Sedaka's "Breaking up is hard to do." playing in the background when I called Spags into my office.
Or, maybe Peter, Paul and Mary's "Leaving on a jet plane" might work also.
Or, the Monkees "Take the last train to Clarksville" or....or..
WHAT SAY YE?

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
There must be, 50 ways, to fire Spagnuolo
You just say, "pack your bags, Spags."
Make a new plan, Stan.
It now time that you leave, Steve.
The Rams fans get a reprieve.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: You have been hired to fire Spags
In all honesty, you tell him straight up how it is, what he did wrong, how he can improve, and why it ended up not working out.
Steve Spaguolo, whatever he may be, was not a rude or disrespectful man, and treating him like one would be a dirtbag move on our part.
Hey Steve, so you probably know why I have brought you in today. First and foremost, on behalf of the Rams organization, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to you for what you have done with this team. I understand that when you were brought in, this franchise was in a miserable state with players who did not care, with staff that did not care, and no identity and no direction going forward. You and Billy Devaney helped change that in a span of only a few years. You and Billy have coached up some good kids, and have brought in a solid group of young guys who will serve us well going forward. We thank you for all your hard work and the sleepless nights that you have sacrificed for this team and this organization.
But as you know, the NFL is a business, and we have not been winning. To the contrary, we have actually been losing, and for a long time too. The fans are getting sick of it. The office is getting sick of it. Heck, I'm getting sick of it. We have been struck by an immense amount of injuries this year, and I understand that. However, I feel that many of the players on the team just did not look ready to compete every Sunday, and sometimes I question the decision making on the field. I'm sorry to tell you this Steve, but we have to let you go. However, I do understand that this is your first head coaching job, and I believe you are a fantastic defensive coordinator, and will continue to be so. So what I want to offer you is the chance to come back and be our defensive coordinator. This will of course bump Ken down to linebackers coach. You don't have to make a decision right now, just think about it. I understand if you decline because you will have to deal with a new guy running the team you worked so hard to run. I want you to come back because I do see that our defense has improved, and I give you and Ken a lot of credit. So Steve, it was great working with you, and hopefully you make a decision that you are happy with, and I wish you the best in your future endeavors.
