I agree witht he sentiment that this win doesn't exonnorate Martz from the criticism he's received, just helps calm the criticism down a little. I mean, he didn't really coach any differently than usual so I don't see how anything's really changed as far as Martz himself goes.
The usual laundry list of things that he does were there and I won't bother going over them. The team won, showed lot's of heart and desire and overcame their mistakes. It was probably their best game of the season taking into account the importance of the game, quality of the opponent and individual results on the field.
So, would I give Martz credit for today? Yes, in that the team found a rallying point in protecting their coach. Unity is the best thing a team can have going into the playoffs and if Martz is somehow consciously responsible for all of the negative press, player outburts, etc. that forced this team to band together then I would give him all the credit in the world. Manipulating events on such a large scale would truly be one of the greatest psycological ploys in sports history.
It's not impossible I suppose and looking back, the Rams, since 1999, have drawn a lot of their strength from rallying points. Kurt Warner,
Marc Bulger, etc. have all made the team play as a unit and thus become successful. Up until this week, I didn't think the Rams had a "rally monkey" this year. Maybe now they do. I hope so. Up until this week I thought the Rams had no business being in the playoffs and would just be an embarassment if they made it at all. After today, I don't think that anymore. I think the Rams might just quietly advance in the playoffs. The matchups are good. The opposition is hurting and if the Rams keep scoring, they'll have as good a chance as anyone to get to the Super Bowl.
