No one's saying a guy should be overlooked because they sustained an injury. The point is he sustained it the year before he declared (so when drafting him in 2006, there was no 2005 game tape to look at) and he lacked major experience prior to that. In the combine workout that you praise him for, he couldn't complete the agility drills because of tightness in his leg, another red flag.
I would agree with you if you had a lot of college experience to fall back on and had sustained his injury earlier in his career. But Cromartie started one game in his college career and played in only 25 others. Coming off of a major knee injury, the risk was very big. Too big, IMO, for a first round pick. What Cromartie does in the pros isn't going to change how I feel about a prospect in those circumstances.
