Back Injury Leads Cardinals To Release Jackson
The Associated Press
Published: Oct 15, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals released safety Dexter Jackson, who had been sidelined since training camp with a back injury.
Jackson, the Super Bowl MVP with Tampa Bay two seasons ago, was not able to participate in training camp and had been on injured reserve since early September.
He was released late Wednesday, said Cardinals spokesman Mark Dalton, and was not given an injury settlement.
Jackson, 27, signed a five- year, $14 million contract with Arizona as a free agent last year. He played at free safety for all 16 games for the Cardinals during the 2003 season.
He will receive a prorated portion of the $2.25 million he was to have made this year.
Bryant Finds Himself Filling Big Shoes Again
DAVIE - Matt Bryant will kick for the Dolphins on Sunday, his second team in two weeks, as he again fills in for one of the NFL's most accurate kickers.
Last week, Bryant replaced the Colts' Mike Vanderjagt, the league's career leader in field- goal accuracy. This week he fills in against Buffalo for the No. 2 man on that list: the Dolphins' Olindo Mare, who will miss his second straight game with a calf injury. ... Defensive end Chidi Ahanotu has left the team after complaining about a lack of playing time.
Browns DBs Intend To Repay Bengals WR
BEREA, Ohio - Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson has stained this week's Cincinnati- Cleveland game a milky hue of pink by sending the Browns' four starting defensive backs a care package that included a bottle of medicine to settle an upset stomach.
Johnson sent the bottles attached with a handwritten note to Daylon McCutcheon, Earl Little, Robert Griffith and USF's Anthony Henry. Johnson wrote: ``Hope this adds some color and relief to your week,'' and signed each note.
``You laugh and at the same time it's a little sign of disrespect,'' Little said. ``I know he's not trying to disrespect us as in we're garbage. That's how he is. He's a flashy guy.''
Johnson's clever idea was meant for more than just pregame trash talk. He has teamed up with Pepto-Bismol to raise money in the fight against breast cancer.
BEARS: Four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher, who had never missed a game in his four-year career before sitting out the past two with a sore hamstring, has been practicing this week and hopes to play against the Redskins.
BILLS: Running back Travis Henry (foot) missed his second straight practice, opening the possibility for Willis McGahee to get his first career start.
JETS: Right guard Brandon Moore (hamstring) will miss Sunday's game against the *****. The Jets had already ruled out left guard Pete Kendall (toe). Coach Herman Edwards said Brent Smith will start at left guard and Jonathan Goodwin at right guard. ... Receiver Santana Moss (hamstring) is still questionable.
PACKERS: Wide receiver Robert Ferguson hurt his left ankle during a special teams period before the start of practice. Ferguson already was on the injury report this week as probable with a sore knee. The ankle injury was added to the report, but Ferguson remained listed as probable.
RAIDERS: Coach Norv Turner still considers Jerry Rice a starter in the offense and plans to use the receiver against Denver. The 42-year- old Rice told the team he wants to be traded if he can't have a significant role, and he met with owner Al Davis on Wednesday night to discuss it.
``Gosh, I wasn't in it,'' Turner said of the meeting. ``They talked about the situation and nothing has happened to this point. Jerry practiced today and had a good practice.''
REDSKINS: Kicker John Hall strained his right groin during practice, his third injury of the season. He will be held out of practice today and is questionable for Sunday.
SUPER BOWL: After this year's Super Bowl ``wardrobe malfunction'' by entertainer Janet Jackson, the NFL has chosen a veteran producer, Don Mischer Productions, for the Super Bowl halftime show Feb. 6 in Jacksonville.
