Percy Harvin on Seahawks PUP list with hip injury

    By Dan Hanzus

    Published: July 25, 2013 at 02:55 p.m.

Percy Harvin's first training camp with the Seattle Seahawks begins on the physically unable to perform list.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that Harvin has a possible slight tear in the labrum of his hip and will get a second opinion early next week, according to a source who is aware of Harvin's condition. The team will know more about his availability then.

The news is surprising because Harvin participated in minicamp practices with the team last month. Harvin was sidelined the second half of last season with an ankle injury, but had been believed to be back to 100 percent.

The Seahawks gave up multiple draft picks in March to secure the mercurial playmaker in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings. Harvin has missed time with injuries and migraines throughout his career, though he passed a physical to finalize the trade.

Harvin is expected to be a main cog of a Seahawks team expected to make a run at the Super Bowl this season. Now Pete Carroll must hold his breath and hope he'll have Harvin as an option as he gameplans a new season.

Harvin’s hip injury could require surgery
Posted by Mike Florio on July 25, 2013, 3:00 PM EDT
    Percy Harvin AP

For plenty of players who land on the physically unable to perform list, it’s a short-term stay that has no lasting impact on the player or the team.

For Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin, that may not be the case.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that his hip injury could result in surgery. As NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported (and as PFT has confirmed), Harvin has a “slight tear” in the labrum. We’re told that the injury was spotted in an MRI performed on Thursday.

The team wants Harvin to try to practice and play with the injury (along with non-surgical treatment, of course). Harvin intends to exercise his right to a second opinion, and arrangements currently are being made for Harvin to be evaluated by a top expert in the field. (Why do we have a feeling that the names “James” and “Andrews” eventually will emerge in connection with this story?)

Depending on the second opinion, Harvin may ultimately have surgery.

It’s not bad news yet for the Seahawks. But it eventually could be.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters Thursday that Harvin -- a surprise addition to the team's physically unable to perform list -- suffered a hip injury during a workout last week. Carroll said surgery has not been ruled out.

Momentum seems to be building that this is something he may be able to play through, but we'll know more on Tuesday when he gets his second opinion. Surgery means he'll be done for the season, I believe.

It could be career ending. My 87 year old grandfather had hip surgery and he hasn't played a down of football since.

Re: Big Trade or Big Pain/Percy Harvin On PUP

Report is he's deciding on what his treatment route will be after getting the second opinion. IMO that means they suggest surgery but he could let it rest, do physical therapy and see what happens. Even if he avoids surgery now, he'll be dealing with it all season. It'll be painful for a long time whenever he tries to make a cut and puts pressure on that hip.
