Broncos Fire HC Shanahan
via Rotoworld:
Add him to the list of possible head coaching prospects? You have to admire what he's been able to do with his timei in Denver and he definitely has the HC experience that some of you guys are looking for.Broncos stunningly fire Mastermind Shanahan
Broncos fired head coach Mike Shanahan.
The better decision would have been to strip Shanahan of his personnel duties, but owner Pat Bowlen made the reactionary move to fire him outright. Bowlen is very unlikely to find a better in-game strategist and influence on Jay Cutler. It's also now unclear what will become of the team's zone-blocking running system, a longtime Broncos staple. Shanahan finishes his 14 years in Denver with a 136-86 record, two Super Bowl wins, and seven playoff appearances. This is a foolish firing by the Broncos. Dec. 30 - 5:20 pm et

Maybe not as a head coach, but how much would Jax absolutely love it if he became the offensive coordinator. More to the point, how much would we love bringing Shanahan's offensive line and running back finding skills to the Rams? Jax gets injured? No biggie. Give one of the cheerleaders a contract and she'll run for 100 yards and a TD or two.

Re: Broncos Fire HC Shanahan
I'd be more than okay if he was the hire. His defenses of late have been awful but a few years ago they were top 5. Maybe him plus one of the DCs we were thinking about as a head coach? Maybe Moss from the packers.

Re: Broncos Fire HC Shanahan
Kind of a surprise, but then again, not a huge one. Without Elway, Shanahan's been able to win games in the AFC West but hasn't done anything in the post-season. 1-4 post-season record in the post-Elway era. The collapse at the end of this season was the final nail in the coffin.
With a capable GM and scouting department to help him with personnel and a strong defensive coordinator, he'd be very intriguing. I'd be curious how Steven Jackson would produce in a Denver-esque zone blocking system, because I think he's a bit shiftier and a bit less "power back" than many think.
But I think Rotoworld's more detailed analysis for once really hit it on the head, and this is the case with so many coaches, too - very few coaches IMO can really pull off being the coach and the GM at the same time. Shanahan was able to shop for the groceries and it didn't work out. Pair him with a good GM and personnel department to find the pieces he needs, and it should work out at least as well as it has in Denver until recently.

No.
Shanahan the Genuis's IQ dropped about 50 points without Elway and Davis.
Not only that, but the home field fan base, weather, and altitude have always given Denver a slight advantage IMO. (Just ask Cleveland and Miami et al)
I'll pass, thanks.Last edited by VegasRam; -12-30-2008 at 07:58 PM.

Re: Broncos Fire HC Shanahan
Shanahan was a good head coach but a bad GM - kind of like Dan Reeves was for my Falcons. Shanny was abysmal at drafting defensive players and signing defensive free agents......that is what got him fired.
Denver will get a real GM and then find a head coach......Denver is now the most attractive coaching opening by far.
1) great franchise
2) stable ownership
3) huge fanbase
4) young franchise QB in place
5) nice new stadium
6) biggest game in town
7) friendly media
Great, great spot for a head coach to land....

shanahan?
Anyone think he would make for a good coach?
I think if he taught SJ his "1 cut" technique, he could probably get him to lead the league....plus a couple FA O'linemen.
However, they mentioned his defense has given up 400+ the last 2 years...but we're used to that.

Re: shanahan?
Personally I wouldn't mind him as our coach. He has a good reputation that could potentially bring in some respectable free agents.
