    Chad Ocho Cinco?

JOHNSON WANTS TO BE OCHO CINCO, LEGALLY
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 12, 2008, 7:24 p.m.
Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was fined $5,000 for wearing “Ocho Cinco” on the back of his jersey before a game in 2006.

To avoid getting fined, Johnson hasn’t done it since then. But Johnson now has a plan for how he can get away with having “Ocho Cinco” spelled out over the “85″ on his back.

We’ve learned that Johnson has taken the first steps in the state of Florida toward legally changing his last name to Ocho Cinco.

    Seriously.

If Johnson follows through on this, his actual, legal name will be Chad Ocho Cinco, and the NFL would then (we assume) allow him to put his new last name on the back of his jersey.

From a business standpoint, this might be Chad’s way of picking up some of the extra cash that he wants to make but that the team has said it won’t give him. The jersey would instantly become one of the NFL’s top sellers, and NFL players get a cut of all sales of their jerseys.

In recent interviews, including one on ESPN Monday night, Johnson has made veiled references about future plans that he has said will change the way fans think about him. This is a strange one, to say the least.
Reminds me of Lloyd Free. Remember.. he changed his name to World B. Free?

What if he made the name change and then got traded to a team that already had an 85? Fans would probably think he was pretty stupid.

Then I guess the announcer would say something to the effect of "at Wide Receiver, number 88, OCHO CINCO!"?

Then he would always be Ocho Cinco regardless of his uniform number... but that may just prompt another name change.

On a side note I heard on the Dan Patrick show today that there are some names one cannot have put on a jersey when buying them from the NFL. Names such as "Gay" although there are 2 active players with that name, and Ron Mexico, among others.

    That would be absolutely hilarious.

So Randall or William Gay can't have their jerseys sold by the NFL? Talk about injustice. They go through life with that name, perservere, then get their jerseys blackballed by the league? Ridiculous.

So I guess if De'Cody Fagg makes it with an NFL team, you won't ever see his jersey for sale either?

True. He could probably try to buy the number off the current holder, unless that player was a pretty big star as well.

I HATE players who think that they are above everything. Chad can do what he wants, but he will lose respect for this.

What about his family? They must be about ready to cut him off. If he were my kid, money or not, I would disown him for throwing his family name away just for attention.

Leave it to a "MOM" to bring up the (very valid) family aspect. How bad would it suck for his family to watch their celebrity son throw away his name like that?

Looks like seeing Earl Goathumper's name in lights is out as well, huh?
