That's a little critical, don't ya think? He was kicking a 54 yarder, not exactly a "gimmie"....
If you want to kick somebody in the arz, it should be the dummy that head-butted an opposing player that kept a drive alive that lead to a score, or the idiot that intercepted a fourthdown pass and then fumbled it. For cryin' out loud, knock down the pass, don't catch it!!! ...OR, the catch by the TE? and NOT going out of bounds to stop the clock in the final drive. Also, during the last drive, players (WR's) were lining up in the wrong place, causing Rivers to redirect them into the proper position, which cost them valuable time they did not have.
It's a shame that many San Diego fans will blame Marty for the loss, and this time, it wasn't his fault at all. This loss goes right to the players and their undisciplined, selfish actions.
But the kicker wasn't the reason they lost that game.
Isn't it the coaches job to run a diciplined team?As for not being his fault, he wasted a TO on that ludicros challenge,and with 8 seconds remaining could easily have ran another play to the sideline,which would have made the FG closer..Add in the 4th down they went for and I think he called a poor game..Quote:

I'm not saying that Marty didn't make some questionable decisions. But in every game, it's real easy to second-guess the coaches after the fact. You know what they say about hind-sight, it's always 20-20. I also would have run one more play to try and get closer for the tying field goal, but they would have had much more time if the idiot reciever gets out of bounds, and guys are quicker to line-up. That's NOT the coaches fault, that's a player fault for not doing HIS job! I do agree that the challenge was stupid, but who knows where the information was coming from? As for the complaint about Marty going for it early in the game, at 4th and 11.... It's funny, going into the game, everyone was worried about "Marty ball", and his history of being too conservative in the playoffs. When the guy finally shows some testicle fortitude and "goes for it", he catches flak! If that were Mike Martz making the call, would people have said the same thing?
...and finally, about discipline.
It's NOT the coaches job for a player to stay disciplined. He can instill discipline to a team and preach discipline until he's blue in the face, but isn't it really the responsibility of the player himself to remain disciplined? My gawd, people are responsible for their own actions, are they not? It's clear that too many of the SD players lack discipline in their lives. Look at their track record this year for off-the-field problems. Marty did not lose this game, his players did the job all by themselves.
