Browns Sign Cb Mickens

By SportsTicker
BEREA, Ohio (Ticker) - The Cleveland Browns have added a veteran presence to their injury-riddled secondary.
The Browns and cornerback Ray Mickens agreed to terms on a one-year contract Thursday, reuniting him coach Romeo Crennel.
Released earlier this month when the New York Jets signed free agent Ty Law, Mickens will practice with the Browns once he passes a physical and conditioning test, according to team spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz.
Mickens spent nine seasons with the Jets and played in New York from 1997-1999 with Crennel, who was the club's defensive line coach at the time.
The Browns actively have been searching for help at cornerback for the past few weeks with Daylon McCutcheon being held out of training camp practices with migraine headaches and dizziness.
Michael Lehan had moved into McCutcheon's starting spot but strained his hamstring during practice Wednesday. Lehan missed six games last season with calf and hamstring injuries and was out four games in 2003 with the same injuries.
The 2005 season will be a comeback campaign for Mickens, who missed all of 2004 after tearing a knee ligament during training camp. In 2003 he recorded a career-high 75 tackles and had two interceptions in 14 starts.
Mickens was drafted in the sixth round of the 1996 draft after playing at Texas A&M. Before the 32-year-old missed all of last year with a torn ACL, he had missed just one game in his eight previous seasons with the Jets.
