Sources told the Dallas Morning News that the Cowboys release of quarterback Quincy Carter on Wednesday was a combination of him violating the league's substance abuse policy, his attitude towards competition with Vinny Testaverde, and his poor performance early in training camp. A source also said that head coach Bill Parcells and owner Jerry Jones were not comfortable having a starting quarterback who is one violation away from a four-game suspension. While Carter did not deny the drug rumors, he was upset over reports that he tested positive for cocaine. "I'm shocked. I'm at a loss for words," Carter said. "The one thing I know and the people who have been around me all my life know is that cocaine has never been an issue for me. It never will be. I just want my teammates and fans to know that cocaine rumor is ridiculous. It's disturbing that a rumor like that would come out."

NFL Live reports that this was Carter's second failed drug test, the first one was around Week 7 in 2002, which was around the time that the Cowboys played the Cardinals and Carter threw four picks and was benched for the rest of the season. Carter's failed test this time 'round was a league administered test despite rumors that it might have been an illegal franchise test. Parcells said he'll evaluate Tony Romo and Drew Henson before thinking about getting another player to back-up Vinnie.

My question is, and this sort of stems from the logic that Ricky Williams intentionally failed his drug test because he was sick of playing football, is it at all possible that Quincy saw some writing on the wall and wanted to get out of Dallas? Think about it. Parcells brings in his man Vinnie to challenge for the starting job. Then, the Cowboys make a deal to get Drew Henson, the QB of the future for Dallas. So now Carter's job is in question for this season, and the Cowboys look like they have a different answer for the future. Where does that leave Quincy in Dallas? He'll have to beat out Vinnie in order to start this season, but even if he starts this season, it doesn't look like he has much of a future with the franchise.

The more I think about it, the more I'm wondering if maybe Carter intentionally failed his league-administered drug test in order to instigate the Cowboys into releasing him so he could try and make a run at a starting job on another team where he might have a future? Surely he won't find a team where he can start this season, but he might be able to find a team that sees him as a talented quarterback and will give him a shot to be their QB of the future, something he probably wouldn't have had in Dallas.

I don't know, it's one big conspiracy theory, but I wouldn't eliminate it from the realm of possibility.

Interesting theory, but according to his best friend on the team (Aveion Cason) and the man replacing him (Vinny Testaverde), Quincy was genuinely shocked and crushed about it.
