Cowboys release safety Roy Williams
The Dallas Cowboys announced the release of veteran safety Roy Williams on Thursday.
Roy Williams, S
Career Statistics
Seasons: 7
Tackles: 506
Forced Fumbles: 10
Interceptions: 19
Touchdowns: 3
Williams, who was the Cowboys' first-round draft pick out of the University of Oklahoma in 2002, earned five Pro Bowl selections during his seven seasons in Dallas.
From 2002 to 2007, Williams started 92 consecutive games for Dallas. He has 506 career tackles, 10 forced fumbles and 19 interceptions.
Williams missed most of the 2008 season with a broken arm.
"Roy has been a wonderful representative of this organization since coming to Dallas," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement released by the team. "Unfortunately, we have reached a crossroad with his time here in Dallas, and the difficult decision was made to allow him to explore other opportunities in the NFL."
Williams' release comes on the heels of the Cowboys cutting enigmatic wide receiver Terrell Owens.
Despite his reputation as a hard-hitter, teams never hesitated throwing Williams' way in recent years because he struggled in coverage. After Owens, Williams likely was the second divisive figure among Cowboys fans -- especially after cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones and defensive tackle Tank Johnson left Dallas.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Re: Cowboys release safety Roy Williams
Isn't Otagwe a Free Safety?
And Williams is a Strong Safety?
We've been lacking a good strong safety for some time. One who can help out against the run, and yet still be involved in punishing receivers after the catch.

I think Roy would look good in a Rams uniform.

Re: Cowboys release safety Roy Williams
I don't want this guy anywhere close to a Rams locker room. Outside of what most believe, Roy Williams was much more of a bigger locker room cancer for the Cowboys than T.O. was. At least T.O. didn't call out a specific teammate to the press like Roy Williams did. He called out Terrence Newman for allowing a big play when in actuality Newman was having to cover for Williams who blew coverage. Roy Williams covers WR's worse than Adam Archuleta.

Re: Cowboys release safety Roy Williams
Please tell me that Chaveous is no longer on the team? It's the offseason and I can't remember.
If he is still on the team, than I would take Roy Williams in a heartbeat. A little cancer is OK, winning is like radiation therapy.
Or are we expecting Bartell or someone to play SS?
