Farewell Danny: Amendola heads to Patriots in $31 million deal
45 minutes ago • By Jim Thomas

The Rams were willing to go about $4 million a year on Danny Amendola. Amendola wanted $6 million plus. So at the start of free agency it was clear that if the market was there for Amendola, his time was over with the Rams.

Turns out the market was there. Amendola agreed to terms with New England on Wednesday evening on a five-year, $31.5 million deal that according to the NFL Network and other reports includes $10 million in guaranteed money. That’s $6.1 million per year.

No one doubts Amendola’s toughness and skills when healthy, but it’s a lot of money for someone who has played in only 12 of the Rams’ last 32 games and never had more than 689 receiving yards in four NFL seasons.

But in the precision passing game of Tom Brady and the Patriots, Amendola could double that career-high total if he’s on the field for 16 games in 2013. When Wes Welker signed a two-year, $12 million deal earlier in the day with New England it seemed inevitable that the Patriots would go after Amendola _ and go after him hard.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was a big fan of Amendola’s during the 2011 season even though Amendola suffered season-ending elbow and triceps injuries in the season opener. (McDaniels was the Rams offensive coordinator that year.

And the Patriots were believed to be interested in Amendola a year ago when he was a restricted free agent, although Amendola ended up returning to St. Louis on a second-round tender offer.

I guess you can't call Danny Amendola a poor man's Wes Welker anymore.

He may actually fare better with injuries in that division. I don't think any of those teams hit as hard as the ones in the NFCW.

Theres no point saying 'why didnt we just pay him?' obviously the front office werent willing to give up that much for him. Whether we liked him or not is irrelevant, we aint the money guys. Good luck to him, cant say ill like seeing him in a Pats uniform though...

Danny Amendola - WR - Patriots

Updating a previous item, Danny Amendola's five-year Patriots contract is worth $27.7 million.
The deal was originally reported at an agent-inflated $31 million. Amendola wound up getting less money per year than Wes Welker, which further supports the notion that the Patriots signed Amendola before Welker left for Denver. The Patriots also smartly tied up $1.72 million of the deal in per-game roster bonuses, meaning injury-prone Amendola will have to stay healthy to get that money. His signing bonus is $6 million. Amendola gets $10 million guaranteed.

Balzer: Amendola Contract Not What Originally Advertised
    Saturday, March 16, 2013
    By: Howard Balzer

As is often the case in the reporting of contracts, the deal wide receiver Danny Amendola signed with the New England Patriots is not what was originally advertised.

Widely circulated as a five-year contract worth $31 million, the total value is actually $28.5 million and $2.5 million of that are per-game roster bonuses of $31,250 that are included in each of the five years of the deal.

If Amendola is able to play all 16 games in a season, his total take from the roster bonuses would be $500,000. In the last two seasons with the Rams, Amendola played a total of 12 games; one in 2011 and 11 last season.

He did receive a $6 million signing bonus and $4 million of his base salaries are fully guaranteed. The yearly salaries are $2 million this year (guaranteed), $3 million in 2014 ($2 million of which is guaranteed), $4 million in 2015, $5 million in 2016 and $6 million in 2017.
