Why wouldn't they? The only teams that don't deserve to play in the playoffs are the teams that don't qualify.

It depends on the team. An 8-8 team in a division with two 12-4 teams might be more deserving than a 9-7 division leader from a crappy division.

As for this year, I don't see too many teams in the NFC that are playoff ready. In my opinion there are all of 3 playoff caliber teams in the NFC - Bears, Saints, and Eagles.

Good point! under these circumstances it would not be okay, if an 8-8 division winner would go to the playoffs instead of a 9-7 team that would lose out because of strong wild card opponents.

If the NFL actually got the parity it strives so hard to achieve every one would be 8-8?

I don't see the parity (8-8 teams) to be a fiasco. I much prefer the NFL model compared to the NBA and MBA. Some say they miss the "dynasties" of the past. I don't. It was boring. I could care less about the record of the team during the regular season. Once in the playoffs, its anyone's Super Bowl championship. I thought the Steelers winning it as a wild card on the road throughout the playoffs was perfect. Let's hope the Rams get the same chance to pull off the miracle. Look at it this way. Isn't what the NFL has created the same thing that the NCAA tournament creates every year. A frenzy of possible Cinderella stories?

I guess I should have been clearer on my thoughts.

I meant that the tie breaking process might be a fiasco. We think that wading through some of the recent scenarios are cumbersome? lol

Do 8-8 teams deserve to be in? If they are either a division winner or one of the top 2 non-division winners in the conference, then absolutely they deserve to get in. The only definition of "deserve" must come from the rules, and that is how the rules are stated.

Now, if you ask me, the rules should be modified to handle tiebreaker situations. Enough with the current system of conference records, opponents strength of schedule, division wins, number of letters in mother's maiden name, etc.........if teams are tied for a playoff spot, let them slug it out with an extra week of football. Yea, yea, I know....what about 3-way ties. We'll work on that later.
