Eagles, WR Curtis Agree To Six-Year Deal
March 15, 2007
By DAVE SPADARO
The Eagles and free agent wide receiver Kevin Curtis have agreed to terms on a six-year contract, the team announced Thursday afternoon. More details will follow. The Eagles had Curtis in for a visit last week and worked hard to get the deal done.
Terms of the deal were not announced.
Curtis, one of the most highly-regarded free agents on the market this year, had talks with at least four other teams for his services. The Eagles won out in the end, and now they get a player who caught 100 passes and caught 10 touchdown passes in his final two seasons with the Rams.
Though he wasn't a full-time starter with the Rams, Curtis appeared in all but one game for St. Louis in the last three seasons and caught a total of 132 passes for 1,701 yards (averaging 12.6 yards per catch) and 12 touchdowns.
"I've accepted my role and loved every minute of it in St. Louis and played with some great wideouts out there, but I'm definitely excited about the thought and the opportunity to be on the field more," Curtis said when he visited the NovaCare Complex on Friday.
"I'd like to be a starter, but I'm open to any opportunities that are out there. Bottom line: I want to be out on the field playing the whole game."
Last season, Curtis caught 40 passes for 479 yards and four touchdowns as the Rams' No. 3 receiver. His best season was 2005 when he caught 60 passes for 801 yards and six touchdowns. Not bad numbers for a guy playing behind the likes of Pro Bowl receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce.
He has hopes of parlaying that experience and his numbers into a possible starting job and a bigger paycheck.
"I'm a better player because I was around those guys," Curtis said.
Curtis met with Eagles coaches during his visit last week and sat down to talk X's and O's with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. And he liked what he saw.
"I've watched the Eagles in the past and I'd definitely like to be part of a scheme like this," Curtis said. "They didn't get real specific about (my role), but they want me to come in right away and help them out at the wideout position."
Complicating matters, however, when Curtis visited was that he arrived without an agent. He fired his agent, Tom Condon, on March 5. Curtis had to wait until Saturday before hiring a new agent, Bruce and Ryan Tollner, per NFLPA rules.
Curtis said the two parties "pretty much left (the numbers) out" during the March 9 visit.
Curtis reportedly received lucrative offers from the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions as well as interest from the Giants and Tennessee.
His observation of the Philadelphia visit: "Through this visit I've come to realize that, from top to bottom, it seems like a pretty solid organization -- from the coaches and the front office to the fans."
Now, he will have the chance to show those coaches and fans what he can do on the football field.

Good for him. Glad to see him land on a good team. If McNabb stays healthy, he should put up some big numbers.

Exactly in line with what i expected. He basically got the same money as bennett. I like curtis a lot, but i think we got the better guy over the five year term of the agreement.

I still don't think he will make it healthy a full season as a 1 or 2 wide-out. I really see an Az type thing going on, then you have to add in his age on top of that. He is to small with a wreck-loose type attitude in that small frame. Hope I am wrong...just don't see it though.

Re: Eagles, Curtis Agree To 6 Year - $32 mil
Good luck to him, I'm sure the biggest reason he likes it there is because Andy Reid is a Mormom like himself...Sort of interesting when you think about it. I hope he does well, but like Wraith said, the age is a major factor, his body frame doesn't really concern me as much as age. He has good hands, but the reason he was a top free agent WR is because of his speed...how many years does he have left of that? I highly doubt 6...

Always and Forever a fan of the St. Louis Rams

Good choice. I expect that he will have some very good years with the Eagles. I don't think age is an issue at all, but I would worry about how well his body will deal with a lot of contact. If he can avoid the big hits, I think he will have plenty of good years ahead of him.
