Gallery going out Screaming

Associated Press

NAPA, Calif. -- Offensive lineman Robert Gallery, the Oakland Raiders' top draft pick chosen No. 2 overall, went down with what appeared to be a right elbow injury during Monday afternoon's training camp practice.

Gallery was participating in a half-line blocking drill when he got hurt. He was working with the second team line, but he's expected to be the starting left tackle this season.

Trainers rushed to his side and Gallery yelled in pain, holding his right elbow. He was immediately examined.

Owner Al Davis sought an update from trainers and personnel chief Michael Lombardi after Gallery headed for the locker room.

Gallery didn't start in the Raiders' 33-30 exhibition win over the San Francisco ***** on Saturday night, but he played with the first team.

Yikes, that could be bad news for Oakland.

Gallery's elbow injured, but tests show only strain
Nancy Gay, Chronicle Staff Writer
Tuesday, August 17, 2004

The Raiders received a scare Monday when left tackle Robert Gallery, the team's first-round draft pick, went down in the afternoon practice clutching his right elbow. But an MRI exam revealed only a strained ligament, and Gallery said he hopes to get back on the field immediately.

"Somebody got thrown into my elbow. It locked out and it hyper-extended a little bit,'' said Gallery, who was screaming in pain when the injury occurred midway through the afternoon 11-on-11 drills.

The team's $40 million tackle fell to the turf right in front of team owner Al Davis, who was visibly concerned. Gallery was immediately escorted into the team's weight room, and then taken to a Napa area hospital for X-rays and the MRI exam.

"It feels fine. I'm sure I'll be back out there pretty soon,'' said Gallery, who couldn't recall ever sustaining that type of injury before.

Later in the practice, standout rookie wide receiver Carlos Francis -- the Raiders' fourth-round pick who scored twice in Saturday's 33-30 exhibition victory over the ***** -- finished a post route and pulled up with a noticeable limp, the result of a left hamstring tweak.

"It wasn't anything,'' Francis said. "I've always been a track guy so I know when to pull up when you feel that kind of thing. But I'll be back out there tomorrow.''

Cornerback Ike Charlton also came away from the afternoon practice with an injury. The fifth-year veteran sprained his big toe during a tackle, Raiders coach Norv Turner said.

Briefly: G Ron Stone, who missed the first two weeks of workouts because of a hamstring strain, returned to limited practice Monday. He did not participate in the live drills. ... LB Sam Williams sustained a shoulder injury against the ***** but Turner said the team is awaiting tests to determine when he'll return. LB Donny Green (calf strain) and RB Amos Zereoue (leg contusion) also missed practice and are day-to-day. ... The team waived former Cal kicker Mark Jensen.
