Glad the Greedy Hawks Traded for Harvin

Seattle did not need Percy Harvin this year. That much is apparent.

Still, I'm glad that they got greedy and traded for him last offseason.

    Why?

    Think of the alternative.

The Hawks could have had Cordarrelle Patterson with their own pick, and he would have filled the role intended for Harvin quite well. More importantly, he would have filled that role for the next 3 years at a price (rookie scale) that is much more cap-friendly than Harvin's deal (6 years, $67M, $25M guaranteed). They'll need that cap room in the next 2-3 years, when many of their key players will be up for new deals. Finally, they'd have their 3rd round pick in the 2014 draft.

So, I guess, in the long run, the old saying may prove to be true: pigs get fat, while hogs get slaughtered.

I'll take Harvin and the Super Bowl Champions title and let Pete and John sort out the coming years.

NFC West is going to be brutal next year. This Seahawks fan is hoping the Rams keep Bradford as their QB, though!

Re: Glad the Greedy Hawks Traded for Harvin

The fact that Harvin played a role in, and won, the Super Bowl, does not change my analysis one bit. One TD in a 35 point blowout is hardly worth three draft picks and a break-the-bank contract.

As for Seahawks fans "hoping" that the Rams to keep Bradford as their QB, that's just plain ignorance.

Enjoy your Championship. See you next year.

Ok the sample size was small, but do people not realize that once the offense had a mission statement, Bradford was on pace for 32 TDs and 9 Ints

I find it quite comical that Seahawks fans seem so obsessed and fixated on Bradford.

I hope we keep him too and I also hope the Hawks pay Russell 120 Million!

    Good point.

If the Rams had won the Super Bowl 2 days ago, I seriously doubt that I'd be at a Seahawks site commenting on Russell Wilson.

Notwithstanding his comment about Sammy, i certainly agree with him that the NFC West is going to be brutal next year. Four playoff quality teams. Memories of the old black and blue division in the NFC Central (bears, packers, vikings, lions for all you really young folks out there!)

Re: Glad the Greedy Hawks Traded for Harvin

After my first year and a half in the Marines, I spent two weeks in Russia for Christmas and New Years. When my fellow Marines asked me how I could afford the trip, I told them that I could choose to support the local pizza industry over the course of a year, or I could choose to save that money and spend it on a trip.

While AvengerRam's point is a good one regarding the Seahawks, Harvin, and cap space, John Schneider has done a good job of managing contracts and the cap, leaving them in the position to be able to make a move on Percy Harvin.

Where the OP misses the point is that the Seahawks determined that Percy Harvin was far better than anyone they would likely be able to draft with a mid-20 draft pick. Even assuming Patterson was on par with Harvin, there was no guarantee he would be available.

On the surface, sure -- one TD in a 35 point blowout is not worth three draft picks and a career contract. But that is an awfully superficial analysis. Even just in the Super Bowl, Percy's contribution was far more than just a TD.

Will his eventual total contribution be worth what we gave up for him? We'll see. Will that contract make John Schneider's job much more complicated? Certainly. Will it help our hinder us in our quest for another championship? We'll see.

Oh, please. The Hawks would still have won in a blowout without Harvin.

    True.

The question becomes what does Harvin do this upcoming year? Could be he's a complete bust, and certainly a luxury, but he may yet become relevant. He was in Minnesota. I'm glad they over paid for him, but not that he's on their team.

Re: Glad the Greedy Hawks Traded for Harvin

I think Harvin needs to be careful, in the sense that every one saw him get hit hard and then leave the game against the Saints. That will be the game plan for facing him. I would be careful using him on deep passes and instead focus on the short screens and reverses etc
