Glazer: Jim Mora to replace Holmgren as Seahawks head coach in 2009

Sources: 'Hawks tab Mora as next head coach
By Jay Glazer
Updated: February 5, 2008, 10:36 PM EST

The Seattle Seahawks have tabbed their next head coach.

The Seahawks have locked up Jim Mora Jr. to be their head coach after the 2008 season, league sources have told FOXSports.com.

Current head coach Mike Holmgren has already announced he will return for one more season, but rather than go through an extensive search, they have decided to hire from within.

Mora is currently the team's secondary/assistant head coach, and league sources say the promotion comes with an extension.

It's unclear how such a move could be made with the Rooney Rule in effect, which requires each team to interview at least one minority for any head coaching vacancy. It could be that the league is now starting to acquiesce a bit on the rule when a team knows it's going to hire from within.

Last month, the Colts said assistant head coach Jim Caldwell would replace current head coach Tony Dungy when he stepped away, and now Seattle follows suit with Mora's promotion after next season.

Mora led the falcons to the NFC Championship game in his first season in Atlanta. Since being fired, Atlanta's fortunes have turned for the worst, with the Michael Vick and Bobby Petrino situations, among others.

I've never been impressed with Mora Jr.. I think Vick made him look good that 1st season. The Seahawks can have him.

Well, I don't think this hurts us, so I'm cool with it.

I think the Seaducks are headed in the wrong direction. Rams will win that division next year.

yep im fine with that hire...he may do o.k for them but is no way he`s in Holmgren`s class, definately a downgrade IMHO!

just reminded about the "minority rule" or "rooney rule".....

who did we interview to satisfy that rule when we hired linehan...was it Jerry Gray?

have short term memory issues...which can be a blessing sometimes for a Rams Fan....

This sounds earily familiar. Rings a bell from 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Re: Glazer: Jim Mora to replace Holmgren as Seahawks head coach in 2009

When Mora went to Seattle I assumed he would be the heir apparent for the head coaching position when Holmgren retired or was fired. More recently, when Mora withdrew his name from the Washington Redskins head coaching search I figured that Seattle had informed him of their desire to have him be their next coach, so they wouldn't lose him.

Today, head coaches are being hired because they are either a good offensive guy or a good defensive guy. I've always thought that he was a pretty good defensive coordinator while at San Francisco.

The Seahawks defense already has alot of the pieces in place. If he can get a good offensive coordinator under him he could be successful coaching in Seattle. Hopefully, our Rams will have something to say about that...as in NOT!
