Leinart Fights To Keep Backup Job With Cardinals

NFL NOTEBOOK: Leinart fights to keep backup QB job
    08/05/2009

Leinart fights to keep backup job with Cardinals — Matt Leinart, who last year in training camp lost a battle with Kurt Warner to be the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, is in a fight with Brian St. Pierre to remain the No. 2 this season.

"I think they're just pushing me, as they've been doing for a long time now," Leinart said. "I've been through a lot the last couple of years and seen a lot of different situations and stuff, so what's another one for the books?"

From heralded U$C golden boy to possibly losing his backup role to a guy named Brian St. Pierre? Better get the beer bong ready.

Surely he won't drop to the #3 spot. The coaches have even been saying he's been a lot better this offsesaon with his work ethic. Could some of this actually have to do with St. Pierre looking good?

I think they're trying to light a fire under Leinart incase Warner can't go at some stage during the season because of injury. It makes sense to me, I still see Leinart as a good quarterback in this league given the opportunity.

You are probably right. A lot of starting QBs went down as some point last year, and who whould have tought Warner would have made it all 16, much less able to start all 20.
Anyway, I'd much rather face Leinart than Warner right now,

If Leinart still needs a "push" going into his fourth season, maybe the number three slot is where he belongs. No heart, no toughness, no fire.....a classic bust.

I believe this is St. Pierre's bonus for a play call he made in the NFC Championship game against Philly. He was charged with watching tape and then telling OC Todd Haley when the best time was to use the "Philly Special" flea-flicker. And he did, and it resulted in a 62 yard TD to Larry Fitzgerald

St. Pierre was basically given a raise and a promise that he would get a chance to compete for the backup QB job as a result
