Lions DT Suh misses extra-point try as emergency kicker

DETROIT -- Rookie defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh became the Lions' emergency kicker Sunday.

Suh attempted an extra point -- missing it off the right upright -- during the third quarter against the New York Jets after longtime starter Jason Hanson was injured moments earlier.

Hanson hurt his right knee when New York's Trevor Pryce stumbled into him on a short field-goal attempt. The Jets were penalized on the play, giving the Lions a new set of downs, and Detroit scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run by Matthew Stafford.

The 307-pound Suh, who grew up playing soccer, came on to try the extra point, but with the crowd shouting his last name, he kicked the ball off the upright, leaving the Lions with a 13-10 lead.

Hanson, who was playing his 295th game with Detroit, returned in the fourth quarter to kick an extra point, but punter Nick Harris handled kickoffs for the Lions in his place.

Not a good day for Ndamukong agaist the Jets. He was not only forced to try, and then miss the extra-point that could have been the difference between a win and a loss, but his guarantee that the Lions would not lose any more games at home was shattered after two games.

At first I thought the Lions were just getting cocky by letting him do that... but I guess someone has to do it when your kicker gets hurt.

We should let Bradford work on extra points this week and let him kick one against the niners to furthur show his superiority

Pull a doug flutie on them that would be great to see. If i EVER see bradford kick i am going to have to be taken to the hospital from laughing to much. That actually would be kinda cool if bradford did do that. Im sure doug flutie would be mad because that was one of the things he was known for besides flutie flakes.

Well Suh did beat out some other guys in training camp for the backup kicker job. I would've enjoyed seeing that practice and who else was a worse option than a DT even if the DT is an athletic freak like Suh.
