Michael Vick a no-show at party despite being paid to appear

Michael Vick a no-show at party
Promoter out $20,000 in fees, travel expenses

HALLANDALE BEACH - A score of protesters were there. So were nearly 1,500 partygoers eager to mingle with celebrities.

But the party's host, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, was nowhere to be seen. In fact, he wasn't even in the state of Florida.

"I don't know what to do," party promoter Darnell Aponte said. "This was my first full-blown event."

Aponte, 23-year-old president of the Coral Springs-based Black Tie Group, had organized a May 28 party at Gulfstream Park & Casino in Hallandale Beach to kick off the Memorial Day weekend. Top billing went to Vick, whose scheduled appearance drew animal rights protesters. Also invited were Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers, boxer Floyd Mayweather and rapper 50 Cent.

None appeared. Vick was to be paid $10,000 for his time, and received half up front, Aponte said. The promoter also shelled out nearly $10,000 for radio, handout and Internet ads, as well as almost $5,000 in travel and accommodation costs for Vick and his entourage.

"For me to lose $20,000 hurts," Aponte said. "This is like near catastrophic."

Vick's booking agent, Fred Grant of Atlanta, said the controversial quarterback couldn't make the party because his flight was canceled due to severe weather. "We did everything we could to get him there," Grant said. "We're not trying to be shady or stiff anybody."

Vick was supposed to be at the party by 1 a.m. May 29. When he hadn't shown, Aponte called him. "He wasn't apologetic at all," Aponte said. "He had a really poor attitude: 'I missed my flight, what the heck do you want me to do about it?'"

A check of US Airways records shows Vick's flights weren't canceled, but he may well have missed them. His originating flight from Newport News, Va., to Charlotte, N.C., was delayed nearly two hours, causing Vick to miss a connecting flight from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale. But a second connecting flight from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale, only minutes after the first, would have placed Vick at his destination only 26 minutes late.

"The flight was not canceled," Aponte said. "He breached the contract."

The party was free until 11 p.m., after which it cost $25 to enter the club, Mi6. Partygoers started to leave about 2 a.m., hours earlier than normal, once they realized Vick was a no show. Aponte said the club promised disappointed attendees free admission to a future event, but he's still on the hook for his investment.

"This is money I already spent," the promoter said. "I'm going to try to recoup what I can."

Outside the club, hours before Vick was scheduled to arrive, about 20 protesters carried signs and wore T-shirts condemning him. Once among the NFL's highest paid players as an Atlanta Falcons quarterback, Vick served 18 months in federal prison for operating a brutal dogfighting ring outside his Virginia home. He was reinstated into the NFL upon his release, and now preaches against the bloody sport.

Grant, the booking agent, said Vick's contract allows him to reschedule another event. "If we cannot reschedule Michael Vick, then we refund the money," he said. "We're willing to do everything we can to make it right."

But Aponte is gun-shy about arranging a new event. "It's not worth the risk," he said. "It's going to be hard for me to get people to come out for him again."

Still, the promoter is not among those who damn Vick for his past.

"He did pay his debt to society, my opinion about that really didn't change," he said. "But my personal feelings for him aren't that great."

Well if the flight was delayed and you missed the other flight, what can you do? It sounds like Vick probably wasn't too happy about missing that flight either.
Something like that is not really a big deal to me, just sounds like a lack of communication.

According to the article, there was another flight minutes after the one he missed. So this shouldn't have been an issue. It's bad press that the guy really doesn't need but doesn't seem to care enough about to prevent.

Well, kid.....you do business with hoodlums, you get burned.

    Lesson learned.....hopefully.

Exactly. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Vick's handlers can try to polish his image all they want, but he's still the same bad citizen he's always been. This incident was really no big deal, but it does show his lack of character. IMO, it's only a matter of time before he finds himself in real trouble again.

Yeah, nevermind that he was paid thousands of dollars to be there as part of a contract. If it doesn't sound fun, just forget that part and don't show up.

Yea, that whole "personal responsibility" thing can be such a buzzkill.

You'd think his P.R. people would have made it clear to him that the "I'll do what ever I want regardless of what is right or wrong" attitude didn't serve him well in the past, and it won't serve him well now. The Vick facade of "changed man" is crumbling.
