The new NFC West trash talk has already started

A rude welcome to division for WR Floyd

    By Mike Sando | ESPN.com

How nice of Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman to lay out the NFC West welcome mat for new Arizona Cardinals first-round choice Michael Floyd.

Hold on a minute. That's not a welcome mat. It's a note on Floyd's new doorstep and a direct challenge to the wide receiver from Notre Dame.

"I'm going to wear him out again," Sherman tweeted. "We play them 1st game stay tuned."

The two matched up as college players in 2010, when Sherman was at Stanford. The Cardinal won that game, 37-14, but Floyd caught eight passes for 110 yards. Floyd gained 37 of those 110 yards on a third-and-12 reception in the final seven minutes, after Stanford had built a 34-6 lead.

I don't know how much Sherman was matched against Floyd that day, but when a Seahawks blogger suggested Floyd's selection by Arizona would be fine by him, Sherman re-tweeted the item and added a postscript: "Yep check my senior tape against ND."

According to Sherman, he dominated Floyd so thoroughly that Floyd's offensive coordinator approached Sherman after the game "and said he had no answer for me."

Floyd should not feel bad. Cornerbacks are notorious for their selective memories.

This approach appears to be Sherman's style. He called Cincinnati Bengals rookie A.J. Green "overrated" last season and then reminded skeptics Thursday night that he had "clamped" Green when the teams played last season. More recently, Sherman suggested Peyton Manning would have at least two tough games if the ***** signed him.

Self-confidence is great, and Sherman did enjoy an outstanding rookie season. But he'll face some tough challenges in 2012, and even the best cornerbacks falter from time to time.

Floyd faces challenges, too. He comes to the NFC West at a time when teams in the division have upgraded their secondaries.

Seattle sent three defensive backs to the Pro Bowl last season. Sherman was not among them, but he arguably was their best corner by season's end. San Francisco placed two defensive backs in the Pro Bowl. The St. Louis Rams added tenacious corner Cortland Finnegan this offseason.

Sherman should be focused on figuring how how he's going to be tackling all those RBs coming at him at full speed because Bruce Irvin wasn't as effective as hoped in rushing defense.

Irvin isn't there for run defense as he's a pass rushing specialist. The pick is a surprise, but I'm excited to wait and see - I'm not going to proclaim "best draft ever, love this new FO, superbowl!" like in your forum, or claim the sky is falling and I'm going to burn my jersey (like in your forum).

Sherman is awesome and I love his attitude. NFC West have been doormats for too long and it's time we let the league know we've changes. Rams should do this, too, as the Cards and Niners are on board. I like the Jenkins pick, but what the heck do you guys have against picking or trading for a Receiver? Two regimes, no help for Bradford...oh well, we'll see.

In 2010 Irvin had 14.5 sacks but he only played on 3rd downs. Exceptionally high rate of getting to the QB but as the season went along, he became less effective as teams figured him out.
In 2011 he played him as a starter and he became FAR less effective.
In the NFL Irvin will play 20% of defensive plays. Ouch.

He can't shift to OLB because he's horrific in pass coverage and in space.

Note his highlights. Show me how often you see him getting to the QB against a ranked team. It's a heck of a lot easier playing DE against an OT from Marshall or Norfolk State.

You mean besides the two receivers the Rams selected in the first four rounds of this draft?

You make some fair points in your response, but as a WVU alum, I wanted to respond to this one. As you mentioned Marshall and Norfolk State, I'd note that Irvin only had one combined sack and two combined TFLs against them last season. He was equally as productive against a ranked Cincinnati team last year, and nearly as productive in the bowl game against a ranked Clemson team. He also had 1.5 TFL against LSU last season, although none the year before and no sacks against them in either contest.
