NFL Catching Rule
Random question. I am familiar with most rules in NFL however their is one rule which I am confused about that I have wondered about for awhile. When I have watched previous matches I have seen players make a diving catch for the ball. If they succesfully catch it and fall to the ground on occassion they have got back up and continued to run for extra yards. How is this allowed? Sorry if I appear stupid!

Re: NFL Catching Rule
If the player is touched by anyone on the defense he's "down". They wouldn't want the defense slamming into players on the ground so the rule says all it takes is contact of any kind when they're on the ground. However, if the receiver is not contacted by a defensive player, he can get up and continue the play since he was never tackled. College football differs from the NFL in that every player who hits the ground with the ball is down by contact. Hope that helps.
