SANTA CLARA, California (Ticker) - The San Francisco ***** have found their backup quarterback.

The ***** on Thursday night acquired veteran Trent Dilfer from the Cleveland Browns for quarterback Ken Dorsey and an undisclosed 2007 draft pick.

In San Francisco, Dilfer will serve as backup to Alex Smith, the No. 1 pick from last season's draft. The Niners used Dorsey and Cody Pickett at quarterback when Smith was sidelined with a knee injury last season.

"Trent was a player we had interest in last season," Niners coach Mike Nolan said. "We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the *****."

A 13-year veteran, Dilfer is joining his fifth team. He helped guide the Baltimore Ravens to a the Super Bowl title in 2001.


Dilfer, 34, has thrown for 19,352 yards with 106 touchdowns and 117 interceptions in 107 career games.

In two seasons, Dorsey has played in 12 games, completing just over 54 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

I dont think it means a thing and dilfer was hardly a dominating qb of any kind. They could have accomplished the same thing with the right qb coach. They really didnt give up anything, even though ken dorsey was a "winner" in college. He is a stiff as a pro.

This is a solid move by the *****. They've traded Dorsey, who would never be more than a career back-up with them if Smith turns out to be what they want him to be, for an experienced veteran who can help bring Smith along and step in if needed to manage a game.

i think its a smart pickup for the niners,he's not great but a decent backup for when smith bombs and gets benched.

I agree, that will help stabilize the position. He's a solid backup and will be able to mentor the young lad Smith.
