Packers and DC Jim Bates agree to part ways
Bates, Packers part ways
Press-Gazette
Posted January 16, 2006
Defensive coordinator Jim Bates and the Green Bay Packers have mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced in a press release Monday afternoon.
“I have great respesct for Jim Bates as a defensive football coach,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “He and I have gotten together on a couple occasions over the last several days to discuss him as the defensive coordinator on my staff. Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action for both of us would be for the Packers to go in a different direction.”
In Bates’ one year on the job, the Packers were ranked No. 7 in yards allowed. They had been ranked No. 25 under Bob Slowik the year before.
Bates’ departure means the team will have four different defensive coordinators in the past four seasons.
Bates interviewed for the Packers’ head coaching job last week but was passed over in favor of McCarthy.

He was a great player as well; real hard-nosed and always around the ball. He might be a good DC with the right coach. We shall see.

Re: Packers and DC Jim Bates agree to part ways
The dumbest move the Packers could have made was to let this guy go. His defense kept them in games that they had no business being in. He drasticly improved that secondary to better than respectable. Whoever ends up with him as the DC or HC will have one heck of a coach on their hands and can look forward to not having any defensive problems for years to come.
The second worst choice (does that work) the Packers made was hiring the OC from San Francisco as a HC. I mean, what has he done except nothing...

There's speculation that Bates may replace Eric Mangini in New England as the Patriots defensive coordinator.

Sarge, I think you're referring to Bill Bates, the old Cowboys specialist. Jim Bates never played in the pros.

It is hard to see it, but the mirror is a typical one that says. "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear."BTW, I'm digging the new avatar, Sarge.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
