    Recent Draft News and Rumors

-Rumor has it the ***** have made their minds up and will select Aaron Rodgers at the number one slot. Contract negotiations with Rodgers have gone much better than with Alex Smith, per the rumor.

-Minnesota and Tampa Bay are both interested in trading up to the number two slot in the draft, where Miami currently sits. The Vikings are interested in trading up to grab Braylon Edwards while the Bucs seem interested in Utah QB Alex Smith. If the Bucs do trade up to grab Smith, they may be able to trade with another team to get help at tailback - rumor is they're one of a few teams interested in Travis Henry.

-Miami is interested in guys like Smith, RB Ronnie Brown, and RB Cedric Benson, but would rather select one of them at #5 or #7 overall rather than #2.

-Rumor has it the Vikings have also talked to the ***** about trading down, but this scenario seems unlikely. Though if the ***** did trade down, their top target might be Miami CB Antrel Rolle.

-The Seattle Seahawks have made it public that they'd entertain trade offers for the 23rd overall pick.

-Rumblings indicate that the Denver Broncos are trying to trade out of the first round, hoping to acquire an additional first round pick in the 2006 draft.

-After recently signing both Anturo Freeman and Earl Little, the Packers may no longer be in the market for a first round safety, and instead might focus on someone like Channing Crowder or Odell Thurman, both linebackers who could play the middle and allow Nick Barnett to move to the outside. Though if Thomas Davis is still on the board when the Packers pick, he could very well be their selection.

-There are a number of options available for the Cleveland Browns, including Texas LB Derrick Johnson, whom the Browns have recently said they were interested in. However, the third slot overall is probably too high for someone like Johnson, whose stock has been slipping recently. If the Browns stay put at #3, expect them to draft either a quarterback, wide receiver, or cornerback. Their interest in Johnson could coincide with a trade down with a team like Minnesota or Tampa, since Johnson would look much better at five or seven than at three.

Something tells me that we are in for a ton of trades across the boards on Saturday. I don't recall ever hearing this much pre-draft chatter about teams trading picks. This 1st round may turn out a lot different than some of the recent cookie cutter 1st rounds we've seen over the past couple of years.

ESPN was reporting this morning that the 'phins are saying they will take Alex Smith, but that it may be a smokescreen to force a trade to happen. There should be at least a couple trades for the top 10.

Re: Recent Draft News and Rumors

Well, that definitely would be a good smokescreen, but if I were Miami, I would seriously consider taking that QB at #2. In case they haven't noticed, their QB's suck.

    Lots of trades, definitely.

Do the Rams want to talk to Denver to get another 1st rounder? Is it one of those deals where they don't really have the cap space to sign a first rounder?

If the Rams got an O'lineman and a Safety/CB in the first round, it might be worth their 2006 first round pick? (especially since the Rams will be selecting 32 next year!)

Now there are some rumblings going around that the ***** actually have their sights set on Alex Smith, but I'm wondering if this just isn't a smokescreen to try and force a deal from the likes of Miami or Tampa.

Re: Recent Draft News and Rumors

It sounds like Smith wants a little more than Eli Manning got. I realize the logic in wanting the same money, but sometimes a guy like Manning gets a huge deal, and it shouldn't necessarily force next years team to pay their #1 guy the same amount, or more.

It made sense to give Manning, with his pedigree, a huge deal, but Smith and Rogers are both average, yet the best in this draft. Oh well, I guess the 9'ers will be in cap hell again soon if they have to pay this kid the bank.

Re: Recent Draft News and Rumors

I think you're going to be hard pressed to find a player at the top of a draft class signing for less than the guy who signed at that slot the year before. Usually money across the top of the board for draft picks inflates slightly.

That said, if the ***** or Dolphins can trade down to the fifth or seventh overall slot and grab Rodgers or Smith, they'd jump on the chance, because neither are worth the kind of money they'd get at first or second, IMO.

That's why I think the rumor about Smith to the ***** may be a bit of a smokescreen to try and draw Tampa into trade talks. Then, if Rodgers or Smith are gone at five or seven, the ***** could probably have a legit shot at Rolle, Pacman Jones, or one of the top receivers - all of whom would be good additions.

Re: Recent Draft News and Rumors

    According to John Clayton:

The ***** and quarterback Alex Smith haven't gotten anywhere in contract talks after seven days. The latest problem is language changes the ***** want in the contract. The ***** don't want to pay more than the $7.5 million a year given to Eli Manning, the first pick in last year's draft. There are some restriction in the language of the way the contract is written that bothers Smith's agent, Tom Condon. Talks are positive and will continue until Saturday. The ***** either have to draft him without a contract or change their position to try to get a deal done before Saturday.

I disagree, the 'phins need a RB more than they need a QB. This isn't a good year for QB's and they'd be better off waiting until next year or getting an average guy later in the day.

Re: Recent Draft News and Rumors

There's a hot rumor out of Tampa Bay, saying the Bucs are in negotiations to send Simeon Rice to the San Diego Chargers for the 12th overall pick. Then, the Bucs would either keep the 5th and 12th picks to use themselves or they might... MIGHT... package them and move up to first overall, perhaps to take Alex Smith.
