Report: Daryl Washington will miss entire 2014 season

Report: Daryl Washington will miss entire 2014 season
Posted by Darin Gantt on May 30, 2014, 11:29 AM EDT

The Cardinals knew something was coming. They might not have realized it was this big.

According to Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910 AM in Arizona, Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington will be suspended the entire 2014 season, though it’s unclear if it’s for violating the personal conduct or substance abuse policy.

The Cardinals expected some degree of suspension after he was sentenced to a year of probation for aggravated assault on a female, which would be reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor if he completes his probation.

That’s a huge blow to the Cardinals defense. They signed Larry Foote earlier, and had Ernie Sims in for a visit recently.

They won’t get the same kind of impact on the field from either of those two, but Washington’s off-field exploits have prevented him from having any impact anytime soon.

He was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and another violation of that policy would have triggered a year’s ban.

    NFL suspends Daryl Washington

Arizona Cardinals inside linebacker Daryl Washington will be suspended for the 2014 season for again violating the league's substance abuse policy, the NFL announced Friday.

Daryl Washington had 81 tackles, 3 sacks and 2 interceptions last season after missing the Cardinals' first four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Washington, whose suspension begins immediately, missed four games last season for a previous violation.

"It's completely unacceptable that Daryl has once again put us in this position," Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said in a statement. "We all know what the consequences are and will deal with them.

"From a personal standpoint, our hope is that this suspension will give Daryl the opportunity to accept the necessary help and guidance to get his life back on track, and we will certainly support him however we can."

Washington also was facing another suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy after he was arrested last May on two counts of aggravated assault after an alleged confrontation with his ex-girlfriend.

He pleaded guilty to those charges in March and was sentenced to one year of supervised probation in April.

In 12 games last season, Washington was third on the team with 81 tackles (59 solo), three sacks and two interceptions.

"As it pertains to our team, our approach is the same as it's always been: next man up," Keim said in the release. "... One player's absence is another's opportunity. That approach has served us well in the past and we will rely on it now."

Now will they lay the wood to Aldon Smith?

Grade A idiot. For this to be a year long suspension he had to fail at least 5 drug tests. Arrested earlier this year for beating his girlfriend. Now this, dude needs to figure out how he wants to get by in life.

For some reason, I can see this guy looking up to Aaron Hernandez, saying "I wanna be just like you".

Cardinals picked up a $10 million option bonus on Washington
Posted by Mike Florio on May 30, 2014

The one-year-minimum suspension for Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washingtonmeans that previously he had been in Stage 3 of the substance-abuse program. Which means that he was subject to up to 10 drug tests per months. Which means that he was one failed test away from a minimum one-year absence.

Which means the Cardinals knew. Which means their decision to trigger a $10 million option bonus earlier this year was confusing, to say the least.

The good news for the Cardinals is that have paid only $5 million of the money so far. The better news is that they can keep $2.5 million of that money with Washington gone for 2014.

The good news for Washington is that he can earn back the $2.5 million at the back end of his contract, since the entire deal by rule tolls for a year. Which means that he’s now signed through 2018 instead of 2017.

If he’s never reinstated, the Cardinals can keep the $5 million they haven’t paid and, in theory, try to get $5 million back. But if it ever comes to that, it will mean that the Cardinals will have never gotten Washington him back.

Either way, Washington has 10 million reasons to keep his nose (and urine) clean for the next year, so that he can get back to the league and start earning money he already has been paid — and will start losing at a rate of $2.5 million per year.

I'm all for a risk for reward pick up or draft pick. But when you throw money at an idiot and hope he can stay out of trouble then when the wheels come off you don't want to pay is wrong. The cards now are trying to get that money back, it should be gone IMO.

Part of the CBA allows them to recoup the money given on bonuses. I agree they should have thought long an hard about that roster bonus knowing the situation he was in. I can see them paying it and working towards getting the guy on the right path knowing they had a fall back option to recoup part of the bonus. Honestly if you've screwed up so many times that you're getting up to 10 tests a month chances are you're not going to turn that situation around without a severe wake up call like losing your pay checks for a year, having to repay bonus money because you violated your contract and potentially having to go search for a new job and convince the other 31 NFL teams you're worth a shot. Kids messed up, if somebody wants to smoke pot then by all means go for it. But if you sign a contract for a company that has the severe drug policy in place that the NFL does then maybe you ought to think about whether that joint is worth those millions of dollars you can earn for the next 10 years or however long his NFL career could've/would've/will end up.
