Saints release offensive tackle Jason Smith

    By Marc Sessler

Offensive tackle Jason Smith might find another gig, but he's out of work in New Orleans.

Saints coach Sean Payton told reporters Wednesday the team has released the embattled bookend who began his star-crossed pro career as the second-overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Smith struggled from the start in New Orleans. He was manhandled this summer in team drills and quickly fell out of the discussion as a possible solution at left tackle. That job will go to three-year veteran Charles Brown.

Smith, 27, is firmly entrenched as one of the biggest draft busts of the past half-decade. He fell out of favor with the Rams, who drafted him but then quickly lost patience with the human turnstile.

St. Louis traded Smith to the Jets last season for the equally disappointing Wayne Hunter. The deal was a mess for both clubs: Hunter was cut by the Rams in March, one month after New York washed its hands of Smith.

New Orleans took a chance on Smith in April with a one-year pact. Just four months later, the lineman's career is possibly over.

I don't know who's more pathetic, Smith or Barron. Both talented, but no real heart or determination. I'm sure Smith will get another chance somewhere, especially seeing Barron in Choakland, actually competing for the starting LT job (barely, after a horrible showing against the Saints).

    Talk about two franchise killers.

Can the Raiders sign him to compete with Barron at their left tackle spot? Would love to see who comes out on top of that monumental battle.

The only thing more pathetic would be if they had to block for Lawrence Phillips against Jimmy Kennedy. OMG, I'm depressing myself!

    Go Rams!

That would be an interesting battle between "False Start" and the human "Turnstyle"!

I actually think Barron has the more physical gift in length of arms and atheletism but they both play too often with no heart. Sad to see talent wasted on empty vessals, how can guys like this live with themselves? I guess taking solace in the millions they have been paid to be mediocre players. Sad drafting years, thanks to the gods of football for Les, Dems, & Fish!

    Jason Smith - T - Jets

Jets signed OT Jason Smith, formerly of the Saints.
Smith was cut by the Saints on Wednesday, and it's surprising how quickly the colossal bust has found work. Smith spent the 2012 season with the Jets, and performed decently as the team's swing tackle. He'll fill that role again, but Gang Green will be in serious trouble if Smith has to start games.

No question that Barron was a big disappointment. But he did actually play in the nfl for a while for the Rams, and remember, he was NOT the #2 overall pick in the draft. Jason Smith was a bust of biblical magnitude.

Re: Saints release offensive tackle Jason Smith

I heard that after players leave the NFL 40% of them are broke within a few years. That said, see Jason Smith at a MacDonald's near you. But yes one would think Smith, Barron, etc. names would be forgotten having been ditched by now as notable busts, but it goes to show how the NFL teams are desperate. These type of players can only be found in teams where its DESPIRATION, or a team with the luxury of talent to be "experimenting". Case in point Raiders & the Jets
