Scrambling Quarterbacks

Steve Young and John Elway (maybe not considered scramblers) are the only QB's that I can recall that have won at least one SUPERBOWL.

Why not:

Fran Tarkenton
Kordell Stewart
Bobby Douglas (Went way back for that one)
Randall Cunningham
Steve McNair
Michael Vick
Donovan McNabb
David Woodley

So out of 42 Superbowls maybe 2 have been won with a scrambling QB at the helm. Again that's if you consider Young and Elway as scramblers?

Re: Scrambling Quarterbacks

Tarkenton had his shots, along with Cunningham. Defenses let them down. Bobby Douglass had nothing around him except Payton. The Bears D at that time was similar to the 2005 Rams. McNair got very close as we all know, Kordell wasn't really that good. Vick never really had a running game around him and Woodley just got beat I think.

Re: Scrambling Quarterbacks

You could include Montana, Favre, Bradshaw and Staubach with Young and Elway. Not real runners but could make something happen with their feet if chased out of the pocket.

Roger "The Dodger" Staubach was definitely a scrambler who could be added to the list. Good memory Chris.

Agreed. If not "true" scramblers, they sure were mobile!

Tarkenton was probably the biggest scrambler of them all, not only for his incredible escapes but for his strong stats in the record books. Defenses ran wild -- and mad -- after him so regularly.

Re: Scrambling Quarterbacks

How about "The Snake" Ken Stabler? He was known for his running, and he's got a Super Bowl.

Re: Scrambling Quarterbacks

Any of us rams fans that lived through the great years of the 1970's and yet found us coming up short in the nfc title game year after year, seemingly always finding a way to lose in the playoffs to the vikings and cowboys, still have nightmares of chasing around staubach and tarkenton. Both were fantastic scrambling qbs who left MANY a great ram defender in their wake.

there is another guy who should be added to the list and that is archie manning. If he wasnt such a great scrambler, he may have been sacked 200 times per year when he played for the saints-and that was in a 14 game season!

ramming speed to all

So true GC. I got tired just watching Archie make mince-meat of our defenders as they chased him all over the gridiron.
