The San Francisco ***** have added another quarterback.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the ***** signed Jamie Martin today. Martin will serve as the third-stringer, behind starter J.T. O’Sullivan and backup Shaun Hill.
Although there’s no definitive word on the condition of Alex Smith’s injured shoulder, signing Martin indicates that the ***** don’t expect to have Smith back this season. Smith has probably thrown his last pass for the team that took him with the first pick in the 2005 NFL draft.
For that matter, Smith may have thrown his last pass in the NFL, period. Given the way he’s played so far, and given the uncertainty about his health, he’d have an uphill battle if he ever expects to be in a position when another NFL team feels confident having him under center.
For San Francisco, the 38-year-old Martin shouldn’t have a tough time learning offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s system. Martin played for the Rams from 2001 to 2005, when Martz was the Rams’ head coach.
