Even before the Bengals held their first team meeting of the season, the NFL stunned them with Thursday's decision to lengthen Odell Thurman's suspension for another year, according to a Bengals press release. He may reapply for reinstatement after the 2007 season.

Thurman had been expecting to be reinstated in time for the start of training camp, which opens Thursday with the Bengals reporting in preparation for Friday's first practice. For the past month, Safarrah Lawson, one of Thurman's representatives, has been saying that Thurman met all the requirements of the league's substance abuse policy.

That's BS. Two years for DUIs.

What's more BS.......the punishment, or being stupid enough to flush away millions of dollars because you're too dumb to call a cab?

Is it right or night? That is certainly open for debate. However, these players know what Goodell's stance has been. They better wise up, or else. That appears to NOT be debatable.

When you give one player a season suspension for 10 run ins with the law, and a couple of shootings he was connected to as well as crack dealers operating out of his house, and one player half a season for offenses which sent him to jail, 2 years for 2 DUIs is ridiculous. Obviously he's an idiot for not calling for public transportation or anything but 2 years is overkill, especially after a few players got 2-4 games for exactly the same offenses.

We don't know what the reasons are as to why Thurman wasn't reinstated, so to call it ridiculous at this point is premature. But he missed a drug test in September '06 that resulted in a four game suspension (his second violation of the substance abuse policy), and then during that suspension, was arrested for a DUI with a .17 BAC. It's up to Thurman to comply with all of the steps for reinstatement, and even then it's not guaranteed. This story should develop, but I imagine Pacman is going to have a lot of difficulty being reinstated as well. If Thurman did everything as requested for reinstatement and was still denied, then the Player's Association may step in. That being said, I doubt Goodell just woke up one morning and decided to keep Thurman out for no reason.

I'm guessing there's more to this story. Will we ever hear or read it all??? Your guess is as good as mine.

    Re: Thurman Denied

It would appear we now may have a better indication of why Thurman was denied reinstatement...

Suspended Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman violated his Hamilton County probation and must show up in court to explain why.

Thurman, who was suspended all of last season and for all of the 2007 season by the NFL, was supposed to report to his Hamilton County probation officer July 24.

When he didnít, Probation Officers Liz Albert and Bob Lutkenhoff filed a criminal complaint against him for not reporting.

They also said Thurman still owes $574 in fees, fines and costs due the probation department.

Thurmanís Cincinnati attorney, Ed Perry, didnít return calls today.

The probation was set by Municipal Court Judge John Burlew after Thurman, 23, was arrested and charged with drunk driving.

Initially, Burlew sentenced the linebacker from the University of Georgia to 90 days in jail but reduced that to a six-day, in-treatment program after Thurman admitted he was an alcoholic and spent several months this year in rehab.

Burlew also suspended the playerís driverís license and placed him on probation.

Court records note Thurman was on probation less than two months before he was accused of violating it.

Thurman, whose NFL career could be ended by this probation violation, must report Aug. 21 to Burlew to address the violation.

    Re: Thurman Denied

Thurman was sentenced to two years probation in June, and he apparently couldn't even go two months without violating it. The funny thing is I'm still seeing responses from some fans, Bengals and otherwise, who think a probation violation is minor and shouldn't have caused Thurman to have his reinstatement denied.
