Titus Young arrested for third time within week

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young Sr. was arrested for the third time in less than a week Friday.
Young was arrested around 11:30 p.m. Friday after police responded to a 911 call from a person saying some one was trying to break into their house on the 3700 block of Calle Casino in San Clemente, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Joe Balicki said.
Balicki said Young fled when police arrived and after "a brief foot pursuit" was arrested by deputies.
"They chased him down," Balicki told NFL.com. "There were some punches thrown, some kicks, but there was no Tasering."
Balicki said he knew of no relationship between the home's occupants and Young, adding Young's car had been towed away earlier that day from San Clemente.
Young is charged with suspicion of burglary, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Young is still in custody. His bail was set at $75,000, but Balick said since Young was already out of bail from incidents last week, Young probably won't be released until his arraignment Monday.
It was the former receiver's the third arrest five days. Young was also arrested twice in the span of 15 hours in Moreno Valley, Calif., last Sunday. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI on May 5 and later released. He was arrested again less than 15 hours later after he was caught jumping the fence of an impound lot, trying to abscond with own black Mustang.
Young's high school coach E.C. Robinson, earlier this week said he hoped his former player would seek help. Instead he found more trouble.
The former Lion's situation went from comical to sad quickly. It's needless to say there are more important things than a future NFL career for him to worry about.

So happy we got rid of him. It looks like his NFL days may be numbered.

Said one general manager who did not want to be identified "We were considering giving him another chance, but this third arrest demonstrates how his ongoing problems with route running are still far from solved. He had several chances to escape the police, but he decided to run his own pattern, rather than the play that was called in advance by his accomplice. Also, our sources told us that he dropped some of the loot on the way out the window, giving us more reasons to question his hands"

Unless the San Clemente police department has hired a bunch of cornerbacks, Young should be rather embarrassed to lose a foot pursuit to the police.

Re: Titus Young arrested for 3rd time within a week

Titus Young's father: Son has brain disorder, needs help
    May 13, 2013 at 8:09 pm
    By Josh Katzenstein
    The Detroit News

Titus Young was in good spirits Friday morning.

His father, Richard, said he took Titus out for coffee, and Titus was laughing and looked happy.

But later that day, when Young told his parents he was going to his car to grab his phone, the former Lions wide receiver drove off instead.

"We knew that something had happened to him or he was locked up again," Richard Young told The Detroit News on Monday. "His mind is not capable enough to go out and deal with society because of this situation."

Young's father was right. Titus Young was arrested late Friday night for the third time in less than a week. Orange County authorities allege Young broke into a home in San Clemente, Calif., tried to flee, but he was caught and charged with burglary, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

San Clemente is more than 60 miles away from the Young's home in Los Angeles, where Titus had been living.

Richard Young said his son suffers from a disorder caused by his brain being compressed into the front of his skull, but he couldn't remember the disorder's name Monday. The father said his son's disposition changed after he suffered a concussion during his rookie season, although the Lions never listed that as an injury.

Although Titus Young has medication for the issue, his father said he hasn't been taking it as prescribed.

And, while Richard Young said his son has sought help for the issue, Titus Young hasn't been dedicated to his treatment, which doctors told the father could take six months or less.

"He's not dealing with it the way he should be," Richard Young said. "If the judge gives him a court order, then maybe he'll get the help he needs."

Based on Titus Young's behavior leading up to the arrest, that will be a possibility unless he ends up in prison.

Before the arrest, Young allegedly was "passed out" in his car in someone's driveway and seen peering into parked cars in San Clemente, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said.

"The first call came in at 6 p.m.," Amormino said. "A resident called and said there was a black Mustang convertible in the driveway of their home. A person was inside the car, but the informant didn't know if they were sleeping, drunk or had a medical issue."

When a fire truck pulled up to the home, the man raced off and nearly hit the truck, Amormino said. Authorities determined the man was Young after running the license plates, but never found him.

Multiple witnesses called police again around 8 p.m. to report a man looking into parked cars, Amormino said. Even with assistance of a helicopter, police couldn't find Young, but found and towed his car.

Then, at 11:57 p.m., a resident called police and reported a man was in his home. When police arrived, the man — determined to be Young — allegedly was hiding in shrubs outside the home and tried to flee on foot.

"He was fast, but the deputy was faster," Amormino said.

Young tried to fight the officers, but they subdued him without suffering any injuries.

Young was arrested twice in less than 15 hours May 5 in Moreno Valley, Calif., first on suspicion of driving under the influence then for burglary after he allegedly tried to jump the fence at an impound lot to find his car.

"The felony charges are certainly mounting up," Amormino said. "Those are serious charges that could do some serious state prison time."

Amormino, however, said Young's behavior "certainly warrants a psychological evaluation."

"He's always been temperamental," Richard Young said. "But he's changed. It's different now."

Since the Lions cut Titus Young in February, his father said he has been working out and "trying to get himself together."

And although Titus Young has immense talent, his football future isn't on his father's radar.

"I'm thinking about my son," Richard Young said. "He needs to get help and get better."

In his second season with the Lions, Young was sent home three times, including once for punching teammate Louis Delmas. He also requested the Lions release him via Twitter in January.

"When he's around us, his mind comes and goes," Richard Young said. "He can't really defend himself, and I don't want ya'll thinking he's a bad person."

There is no aspect of this that isn't sad or tragic. Gotta feel for Young's dad.

But this part also has some humor in it:
"He was fast, but the deputy was faster," Amormino said.

What do you do with a guy who does stupid things because of a brain disorder, doesn't take the medicine that helps treat that disorder, resulting in more stupid behavior? Talk about a lost cause.

I have some insight here. My Grandfather had a "brain disorder". When he was on his meds, he was fine. But he would sometimes lose track of when to take his meds. Once he had gone too long without the meds, he thought the medications were poison, and then he wouldn't take them. It can be a vicious cycle for someone that doesn't have a spouse, or close family member, to help keep them on their meds.

I agree with that, because I have had first hand experience with this as well, but by all accounts, Young's father has been a constant presence in his life through high school, college, and into the pros, and I would imagine he would make an effort to see the medication was taken. He certainly seemed to know Young was not taking his medication as prescribed lately.

It depends. I've had family members with medical issues that require desire on their part to treat the disorder, and there is only so much pleading and imploring you can do when someone refuses to help themselves, so yes, there is the chance that if it were my son, the situation could be a lost cause.

Plus, he was a bit of a head case in high school and college. Not buying the concussion.

Mother of Titus Young's son granted temporary restraining order
    By Dave Birkett
    Detroit Free Press Sports Writer
    9:57 PM, May 16, 2013

When former Detroit Lions receiver Titus Young gets out of jail in Orange County, Calif., he won’t be able to come within 100 feet of the mother of his 9-month-old son.

According to Riverside Superior Court’s online records, the woman filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order against Young last week, three days after he was arrested for the first time.

She was granted a temporary restraining order, according to the Press-Enterprise of California. A hearing for a permanent restraining order is set for May 29.

In the complaint, the woman alleged that Young threatened and harassed her at Moreno Valley, Calif., home, even referencing accused wife killer O.J. Simpson, according to the newspaper.

“He would say things like, ‘I understand why O.J. killed his wife.’ He says, ‘We’re always gonna be a family and I’m always going to be his,’ ” the restraining order request states, according to the newspaper. “He got mad and yelled at my neighbors and tried to fight multiple people that he doesn’t even know.”

On Tuesday, Young pleaded not guilty to eight charges stemming from two separate incidents in a seven-day span, including breaking into an Orange County home, assaulting police officers and burglary of a gas station. As of tonight, he was still in the Orange County central lockup facility.

Young, whose charges are punishable by up to 7½ years in prison, was arrested two other times earlier this month, once for suspicion of driving under the influence and once for attempting to steal his own impounded car out of a tow yard.

In the complaint, the woman, who writes that Young “has been clinically diagnosed with a mental disorder,” said Young stole from the gas station while holding the couple’s son, according to the Press-Enterprise.

About 9 p.m. May 4, Young is accused of twice walking into a Laguna Hills, Calif., Chevron station and stealing a bottle of water, candy and cigars. Young took his son, Titus Young Jr., to San Diego before the theft without telling the mother, according to the Press-Enterprise.

He was arrested the first time for DUI about three hours later. Less than 15 hours after that, he was arrested again for trying to steal his car.

“He is not afraid of any authority. He even text me and told me he was king,” the woman wrote in the restraining order, according to the Press-Enterprise. “He used to play for the Detroit Lions and he had many violent problems there. They also could explain (his) unstable mental problem, that he refuses help for.”

Calls to Young’s attorney and father, Richard, were not returned tonight.

Richard Young told the Free Press earlier this week that Young had sought help for his problems at three different outpatient facilities and was prescribed a powerful antipsychotic drug that he didn’t want to take.

Young, who was released by the Lions in February, is due in court on the burglary and assault charges May 24.
