WHINERS--Erickson gone
Dennis Erickson is out as head coach of the San Francisco *****, two sources close to the club said Wednesday.
Erickson reportedly was fired after meeting with owner John York on Wednesday morning. Erickson was dimissed, one source said, after he was asked to release some of his assistants and refused.
Erickson, who had three years left on his contract, will be paid the remaining $7.5 million on his deal, sources said.
The move ends two turbulent seasons for Erickson and the *****. The club was 9-23 under his direction, including a franchise-worst 2-14 this season.
Erickson's dismissal was not unexpected. In recent weeks he made it clear he would stand by his assistants, resistant to York's calls for a shakeup of the staff.
Erickson was hired in 2003 to replace Steve Mariucci, fired after the ***** reached the playoffs the previous two seasons.
The club was expected to make an announcement later today

CONFIRMED
Erickson fired as ***** coach
Jay Glazer / FOXSports.com
The inevitable in San Francisco is about to occur.
FOXSports.com has confirmed that the ***** have fired head coach Dennis Erickson, a move that will be announced at a press conference later this afternoon. In fact, members of Erickson's staff, perhaps looking for work now, have already informed friends around the league that their coach has been let go.
It is also believed that GM Terry Donahue will not be retained, although it's unclear if he was fired, took a settlement, or stepped down.
FOX NFL Sunday first reported four weeks ago that such a move with Erickson would occur during or shortly after the season.
Tuesday, Dr. John York told FOXSports.com that he was still in meeting with both Erickson and Donahue and would continue to meet through Wednesday. Those meetings have apparently led to the end of Erickson's and perhaps Donahue's regimes in San Francisco.
York also met with the pair on Monday and on Sunday he acknowledged that this season was unacceptable and something had to change.
