Jack Youngblood, one of the Greatest Rams of all time... was on the Jim Rome show...it hasn't been that long since he played. He was selected 20th in the First round of his draft....AND HAD TO WORK AT A BANK OF AMERICA IN THE OFFSEASON HIS FIRST 3 YEARS IN THE LEAGUE!!!!
My, economies of scale are way off the chart on this one.
Wow, that's pretty amazing. I can't help but think those old-timers look on to today's NFL with a little bit of resentment when it comes to the economics.
I liked the part of the interview when Rome called Youngblood "Jill" and Jack "sacked" him.
The Rome family asks that donations be made to the United Way in lieu of sending flowers.
Rome is a tool. The fact that he still has a show is amazing to me.
As for the economics of the game...yeah, a lot has changed. Today we're handing kids millions of dollars out of the gate with nothing proven in terms of NFL performance. A single good season, fluke or otherwise, and a player can be set for life (assuming they don't do drugs, gamble or drink their money away and manage to not have to pay it all out in legal fees for being stupid).
I thought it was quite a good interview. I do not like Jim Rome but I do listen to the show when I can because he generally has good interviews.
The 'rants' and the 'smack' are wehn I change the station because they are rarely about sports but 'clones' atacking 'clones'.
Youngblood spoke with a passion for the game, and addressed the need for the NFLPA to help some of the veterans who gave their bodies to help make the game what it is and are now broke from medical bills.
Hard to imagine him in a tiny shirt and tie, handling money.
i bet nobody robbed the bank when he was on duty..:D
Well, apparently, the economics worked out. He owns a 300 acre ranch in florida.

Not that long ago? Youngblood's first season was 1971. Thats 38 years ago. That rates as a long time in my book. So in 72, 73 and 74 he had to hold a second job? I should feel sorry for him because 35 years ago he had two jobs? Sorry, not buying it.Quote:

One thing that has been said in this thread that is dead on is that the NFLPA has to do something about the cost of long term medical care for players who did build the league before the big dollar contracts. I really dont care if they raise the pension, but the league as a whole should have a health insurance program for retired players.
What would be a fair and equtable plan? One, two percent of the tv contract monies would be more than enough to cover it. Think on that -ESPN pays 1.1 Billion a year (yes Billion) for it's rights to broadcast the NFL (2006-2014). NBC pays 650 million a year; CBS and F*x each pay 620 million per year. A one percent share of all the contracts would gross approximately $29,900,000 per year. The league could hire its own doctors for that kind of money. Set up a league-union administered sinking fund to manage it and soon enough that fund pays for itself.
But I guess it would be asking too much for the owners and current players to leave 30 mil on the table for the guys who built the league, huh?

Point of the op was that he had to work a second job in his first three years in the league. That would be '72, '73 and '74. The whole world was different back then, especially in terms of league economics.
I heard that the BANK Drive-up window was created in the 70's because of Jack Youngblood. They didn't want him dealing directly with the customers.:DQuote:
