Brockport Defeats Apprentice, 14-7
Wise turns in big game for Golden Eagles
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - It was the Brian Wise (Newfane, NY/Newfane) show for the SUNY Brockport Football team as the Golden Eagles won their first game of the season with a slim 14-7 victory over The Apprentice School in Newport News, Virginia Saturday.
Wise was the leading runner, receiver, and return man for the Golden Eagles (1-2 overall, 1-1 Atlantic Central Football Conference), who could not muster much else on offense. Wise led the team with 71 yards on the ground including a 3-yard run in the first quarter for a touchdown to give Brockport an early 7-0 lead. Wise added a team-leading 42 yards receiving on six catches and had kickoff returns for 32 yards and punt returns for 89 yards. All totaled, Wise gained 234 all-purpose yards.
Late in the first quarter, Brockport had a second down and 13 from the Apprentice 41-yard line and Wise carried the ball the next two plays for gains of 23 and 10 yards and after an Apprentice five-yard penalty, Wise carried the final three yards into the endzone for a 7-0 lead.
Apprentice evened the score early in the second quarter as Travis Reid caught a 32-yard scoring pass from quarterback Robby Goodman. The play was set up by a 15-yard personal foul penalty against the Golden Eagles. The penalty was one of 11 on the day against Brockport totaling 83 yards.
Late in the second quarter, Brockport took a 14-7 lead as quarterback A.J. Covella (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) connected with tight end Mike Bond (Fairport, NY/Fairport) on a six-yard touchdown pass. The seven-play drive was highlighted by a 42-yard run by Wise that gave the Golden Eagles the ball on Apprentice's 17-yard line with less than two minutes to play in the half.
The game was scoreless in the second half with neither team sustaining any offense. Wise had a 70-yard punt return for a TD called back on a blocking penalty.
Covella finished with 11 completions on 22 attempts for 84 yards.
John Walther ( Dansville, NY/Dansville) led the defense with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery. Mike Maciejewski ( Buffalo, NY/ Cheektowaga), playing in his first game of the season finished with five tackles and one interception. Nate Bowerman ( Farmington, NY/Victor), Lou Periera ( Rochester, NY/ Greece Athena) and Alex Lucci ( Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) each contributed a sack.
The SUNY Brockport football team will return to action on Saturday, September 24, to host Frostburg State on Homecoming and Hall of Fame, and Parents weekend. Box Score
