PROVO, Utah -- Brigham Young called a news conference for Monday afternoon to announce the hiring of a new football coach.
BYU issued a news release late Sunday, saying only that an announcement would be made at 4 p.m. MT at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret Morning News reported Monday that defensive coordinator Bronco Mendenhall was expected to get the job that opened nearly two weeks ago when Gary Crowton resigned after a third straight losing season.
Mendenhall and longtime BYU assistant Lance Reynolds, who has been interim coach since Crowton's resignation, were the in-house candidates to take over for Crowton.
BYU also interviewed Utah defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham, but he declined to return to his alma mater and accepted an offer to take over as coach of the Utes.
