California Suffers First Setback Of The Season Against UCLA
Golden Bears fall to Bruins, 47-40 in wild game.
Oct. 8, 2005
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Maurice Drew ran for three touchdowns, scored another on a long punt return, and caught a 28-yard pass for the go-ahead touchdown Saturday night as No. 20 UCLA rallied for a wild 47-40 victory over No. 10 California.
Drew caught a swing pass from Drew Olson in the right flat and outran defenders down the sideline to score the decisive touchdown with 1:35 to play.
Olson, who had taken the Bruins 75 yards down to the go-ahead score, was sacked on the try for a two-point conversion.
UCLA (5-0, 2-0 Pac-10) sealed the win when Trey Brown intercepted a Joe Ayoob pass at the Cal 23 with 1:19 remaining. Drew then scored on a 2-yard run as time expired.
The loss snapped a 12-game winning streak in the regular season for the Bears (5-1, 2-1). It also cost them their best start in 55 years, dating to when Cal began 9-0 in 1950.
Drew finished with 279 total yards - 162 on three punt returns, 65 on 15 carries, and 52 on two receptions.
Olson finished 17-of-33 for 225 yards and two touchdowns, and he scored once on a quarterback sneak.
Justin Forsett rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown for Cal, and Marshawn Lynch carried 22 for 135 yards and also scored a TD.
Joe Ayoob completed 18-of-35 for 215 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

I was at this game and it was a classic! The Rose Bowl was packed and rockin', and stayed that way to the end. Maurice Drew is an amazing player who I think will be another Dante Hall in the NFL.
