Delaware Falls To William & Mary in Double OT, 44-38

Second Round of NCAA I-AA Championship Action

Dec. 4, 2004

From Delaware Athletics

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Despite leading 31-10 at the half, Delaware allowed 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to allow the Tribe a chance to send the game into overtime where both teams scored touchdowns and converted on extra points to send the game into a second overtime.

Delaware won the toss electing to start on defense and in the second overtime William & Mary made the first strike on an eight yard touchdown run by Jon Smith. Kicker Greg Kuehn, who had been perfect on the season in point after attempts going 55 for 55, missed his first extra point of the season giving the Tribe a six point advantage.

Delaware took over posession and after a crucial fourth down catch by wide receiver David Boler inside the William & Mary 10 yard line for a first down, the Blue Hens could not convert in their first three downs, once again putting the game on the line on fourth down. Quarterback Sonny Riccio took the snap and was flushed out of the pocket to the right looking once again for a receiver but, this time, the Blue Hens would not come up with the reception giving Head Coach Jimmy Lay**** and the Tribe of William & Mary a chance to compete in the NCAA I-AA quarterfinals.
