Defense comes up big for Brockport
BROCKPORT, NY—The SUNY Brockport football team (2-2; 1-1 ACFC) limited visiting Frostburg State to just 21 rushing yards, and picked up a 19-14 victory this afternoon at Special Olympics Stadium.
The win was the sixth straight for Brockport over the Bobcats, as the Golden Eagles improved to 10-4 in the series.
The Golden Eagles forced a Bobcat punt after six plays on Frostburg’s first possession of the game, and capped a nine-play, 87-yard drive when A.J. Covella (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) hit Kevin Beaumont (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) with a 13 –yard scoring toss with 7:19 remaining in the opening quarter.
SUNY Brockport added to their lead with 8:45 remaining in the first half, when Adam Lanctot ( Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) hit a 37-yard fieldgoal.
The Golden Eagles added another score towards the end of the opening half, when Covella found Mike Mahoney (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) kneeling in the endzone from 13-yards out, sending Brockport into the intermission wit a 17-0 lead.
Frostburg responded in the third quarter, taking the opening kickoff 87-yards on nine plays, capped by a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jimmy Ward.
Late in the third quarter, after Brockport turned the ball over on downs at the Frostburg one-yard line, John Walther ( Dansville, NY/Dansville) trapped Ward in the endzone for a safety, pushing the Golden Eagle’s lead to 19-7.
Frostburg added a final score with just 2:21 remaining, when Ward found Mike Perlozzo on a two-yard touchdown pass.
The Bobcats nearly had one final possession, when Kevin Culbert sacked Covella on third-and -10 at the Frostburg 41, but a roughing the kicker penalty on the ensuing punt allowed Brockport to run the clock out to seal the win.
The Golden Eagles netted 357 yards of offense, and limited Frostburg to 265. Brockport outgained the Bobcats 77-21 on the ground, and 280-244 through the air. Each team turned the ball over once.
Covella completed 21-of-30 passes, with one interception and two touchdowns, and rushed for 47 yards. Brian Wise ( Newfane, NY/Newfane) led the ground game with 50 yards. McCormick had nine receptions for 91 yards. Walther was the team’s leading with 13, including two sacks. Joe Pereira ( Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Tim Weber (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) also had a pair of stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Ward connected on 16 of his 33 passing attempts, for one touchdown, one interception, and was sacked three times. Fred Howe snared four receptions for 18 yards. Culbert recorded 12 tackles, including five for losses, and two sacks.
The SUNY Brockport football team will be back in action next Saturday at Ithaca, with a 1 p.m. kickoff time.
