June Jones resigns as UH coach

June Jones has resigned as University of Hawai'i head football coach, according to his close friend, Al Souza.

Jones resigned this morning, citing among other things a lack of loyalty and commitment from athletic department leaders.
"This breaks his heart," Souza said of Jones' decision to leave.
Jones also sent letters to friends announcing that he is resigning after nine seasons. He thanked his friends for their support in the letter, in which he listed several reasons why he would no longer coach at the school. Full details of the letter were not available.
Jones is en route to Dallas, where he will meet with other SMU officials about the Mustangs' vacant head coaching job.
Jones is scheduled to meet with the SMU president, athletic director, search committee and boosters tomorrow. During that time, he is expected to receive a contract offer that would pay him up to $2 million a year. Jones currently earns $800,016 from Hawai'i on a contract that expires June 30.

June Jones' modest football office at the University of Hawaii is the same run-down room former coach Dick Tomey sat in 20 years ago.

"Same carpet, too," Jones said matter-of-factly.

The recruiting budget also hasn't moved since Jones took the job in December of 1998. It's been three years since he has traveled from Honolulu to the mainland to recruit. And until 2006, Hawaii's coaches did not have DVD equipment to share and record game film. The one camera they did have, Jones won at a Sony Pro-Am golf tournament.

You can't really blame Jones for leaving. Hawaii has been nickle and diming him since he got there, despite the success and national attention he has brought to the school.

With the way the BCS works, you're right that it would be next to impossible to get in the Championship game coming out of the WAC, regardless of how good they actually were.

Is he really that much closer to a national title as head coach of a C-USA school though? Sounds like leaving Hawaii because of those conditions was an understandable choice, but I'm not sure going to SMU puts him all that much closer to realizing any national championship aspirations.

May not get him closer to a BCS....but a 1.2 million dollar raise is a big trump card.
