Slippery Rock, Pa. - Josh Kniess rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns and had 160 yards on four punt returns Saturday night to lead The Rock to a 28-21 win over visiting California U. of Pa. in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action.
The win was the second straight for The Rock, which had lost its first three games this fall, and the second in as many PSAC-West games.
California fell to 3-2, 1-1.
The Rock used a ball-control offensive attack to frustrate California's high-octane attack; SRU had the football 38 of the 60 minutes in the game.
SRU also recovered two onside kicks (one by each team), blocked an extra-point kick, intercepted one pass and had 207 yards on kickoff and punt returns.
All three Rock TDs were set up by long punt or kickoff returns.
SRU outgained California by a 346-302 margin behind 220 yards rushing and 126 yards passing.
Corey Manfull had 91 yards and one TD to complement Kniess' rushing effort.
Quarterback Nate Crookshank was 12-of-21 passing for 126 yards and threw two interceptions.
Colin Golden caught five passes for 42 yards and Paul Favers had three receptions for 38 yards to lead The Rock receiving effort.
Brandon Rakszawski, Aaron Berarducci and Clinton Forsha had five tackles each for The Rock defemse.
The Rock travels to archrival Indiana U. of Pa. for a 2 p.m. game next Saturday.
