CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Hakim Hill didn't even make it to spring practice with Northern Iowa's football team.

Given a chance following his dismissal from Arizona State's team last season, Hill was dropped from the Panthers' roster on Monday after he was arrested for fighting with police officers in Iowa City over the weekend.

"We gave this young man a second chance and unfortunately, he did not live up to the terms of our conditions for him to continue as a part of our athletic family," UNI athletic director Rick Hartzell said.

"We felt like he deserved a second chance and now we have no alternative but to dismiss him from the football team."

Hill fought with the officers and threatened to kill them and harm their families, according to police reports. The incident happened early Sunday when police responded to a fight involving four people at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Iowa City.

According to police, Hill poked and screamed at a security guard at the hotel. When officers identified themselves, Hill repeated the action against them. He smelled strongly of alcohol, officials said.

Told he was under arrest, Hill refused to be handcuffed, police said. The report said he kicked an officer in the shin and officers had to push and pull him into a squad car. He was taken to University Hospitals' emergency room and continued to struggle with police and "made death threats to officers and their families," according to police.

The whereabouts of the others involved in the initial fight was not immediately known.

Hill was not admitted to the hospital and was taken to jail. He was arrested on two counts of assault on a peace officer and one count each of disorderly conduct, public intoxication and interference with official acts. All charges are misdemeanors.

Northern Iowa had given Hill a chance to continue playing college football after he was dismissed at Arizona State for breaking team rules. Hill, a running back who played at Iowa City High, had enrolled at UNI for the second semester and was preparing for spring practice, which starts next month.

But UNI officials pulled Hill's scholarship and he was withdrawing from school, athletic department spokeswoman Nancy Justis said.

UNI coach Mark Farley said Hill broke a "zero tolerance" conduct policy that had been instituted when he enrolled.

Hill, who led Arizona State in rushing last season with 566 yards, was given a season-long suspension as a freshman at ASU after getting into trouble in high school

As a student at City High, Hill was convicted of driving while intoxicated and stealing paint ball equipment. Hill also faced third-degree sexual assault charges, which later were settled as serious misdemeanor assault causing injury as part of a plea agreement, although he did not admit guilt.

I bet Al Davis invites him to training camp.
